Interteaching Questions
Chapters 1, 3, 4
You will need to use the book to complete these questions, not just the PowerPoint lectures I have provided. I suggest reading the chapter and taking notes on the interteaching questions study guide. Then watch the posted lecture over the material and take notes on anything in the lecture that relates to the interteaching guide questions. You should then have a complete study guide to use to prepare for exams.
Chapter 1 Questions:
- What is abnormal psychology? What are the “four D’s” that make behavior abnormal? Keep in mind that these four are all assessed to determine whether a behavior is abnormal, and each exists on a spectrum. You cannot define abnormality by just one of these characteristics.
- Describe deviance with respect to abnormal behavior. Why is it important to take culture and specific circumstances into account when deciding if something is deviant? Give an original real-life example of deviant behavior.
- Define and describe distress with respect to clinically abnormal behavior. Give an original real-life example of distressed behavior. Your book doesn’t have a good definition, use Google for this one.
- Define and describe dysfunction with respect to abnormal behavior. Give an original real-life example of dysfunctional behavior.
- Define and describe danger with respect to abnormal behavior. Give an original real-life example of dangerous behavior.
- Come up with original examples of when a behavior would have one of each the four “D’s” of abnormal behavior, but wouldn’t meet enough other criteria (or wouldn’t be severe enough) to be considered abnormal.
Deviance:
Distress:
Dysfunction:
Danger: - Describe at least 5 things that historical humans believed caused mental illness, and at least 5 inhumane treatments that were the product of these beliefs about what caused abnormal behavior.
Chapter 3 Questions: - Describe the Biological Model, and how it explains abnormal behavior. List the three sources of biological abnormalities, and explain how they can result in abnormal behavior?
- Describe the three major kinds of biological treatments: psychotropic medications, ECT, and psychosurgery.
Psychotropic medications:
ECT:
Psychosurgery: - Describe the behavioral model (your book calls this the “behavioral dimension of the cognitive behavioral model” which is not entirely accurate, as both of these models are separate fields within psychology, although sometimes they are used in combination), and how it explains abnormal behavior.
- Describe the cognitive model (your book calls this the “cognitive dimension of the cognitive behavioral model” which is not entirely accurate, see my comment above), and how it explains abnormal behavior.
- Describe the biopsychosocial model (your book calls this the “developmental psychopathology model), and how it explains abnormal behavior.
Chapter 4 Questions (you only need to know information about the DSM from this chapter)
- Describe the classification system used by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) for diagnosing abnormal behavior.
- Describe the difference between categorical classification and dimensional classification, as these pertain to the DSM-5.
