Data Analysis and Dashboard Creation

Objective:
Students will gather a dataset, perform data cleaning and analysis, and create a dashboard with a compelling story using Tableau. The project is designed to help students understand the entire data pipeline—from raw data collection to visual storytelling.

Project Details:

  1. Data Gathering:
    • Task: Collect a dataset relevant to a specific topic of interest (e.g., Sales Data, Student Performance Data, Financial Market Data, etc.).
    • Tools: Use Excel to gather, organize, and clean the data.
    • Requirements:
      • At least 70 rows of data and 8 columns. (Should include a time/date and four measurements)
      • Ensure that the dataset has multiple dimensions and measures (e.g., time, categories, numerical values).
  2. Dashboard Creation on Tableau:
    • Task: Create a dashboard to showcase insights from the dataset.
    • Tools: Tableau Desktop.
    • Requirements:
      • Graph Types: Use at least 3 different types of graphs (e.g., bar charts, line charts, pie charts, scatter plots, etc.).
      • Filters: Implement at least one filter (e.g., filter by date, region, product category, etc.) that enables dynamic user interaction.
      • Action: Create one dashboard action, such as filtering or highlighting, where clicking on a graph element (e.g., a region on a map) updates another part of the dashboard.
      • Create at least One Calculated Field
      • Title: The dashboard must have a clear and meaningful title that conveys the overall theme or key insight of the data.
  3. Story Creation (Optional – Extra Credit 10 points) :
    • Task: Create a story that walks users through the insights presented in your dashboard.
    • Requirements:
      • The story should have at least 2 dashboards explaining different aspects of the data.
      • Include text boxes on your graphs to highlight important points.

Evaluation Criteria:

  1. Data Accuracy: Is the data clean, accurate, and properly organized?
  2. Visual Design: Are the graphs and dashboard visually appealing and easy to understand?
  3. Interaction: Are the filters and dashboard actions working correctly?
  4. Storytelling: Does the story effectively convey insights, guiding the audience through the data?
  5. Creativity: Is there creativity in the choice of graphs, dashboard layout, and presentation of data?

Submission:

  • Excel File: Submit the raw and cleaned data in Excel format.
  • Tableau Packaged Workbook (.twbx): Submit your Tableau workbook with the dashboard and story. Other type WILL NOT be Accepted
  • Be sure to highlight your filter, action in the submission.
  • Naming: LastName_Firstname_Title

Tips for Success:

  • Think critically about the insights you want to highlight from your data.
  • Make your dashboard intuitive; users should easily find and interpret the information.
  • Be creative with colors and layout but maintain professionalism.
