Evolution of Social Work

“Although public health predates social work, both fields evolved into their contemporary forms during the early 20th century” (Ruth & Marshall, 2017).
The historical development of social work, thus, the evolution of social work practices and ideologies, is inextricably linked to the historical development of society’s values, including sociocultural and socioeconomic developments, as well as developments of the state. You can start to track these developments by comparing multiple time periods for the cultural forces that formed the perception of, or response to, a social problem.
In this Assignment, you will use adapted Photovoice techniques to research a time period post-1900 and, using the pre-1900 time period you selected for your Discussion this week, compare the social work responses to your selected problem pre- and post-1900.
To prepare:
• Review the Photovoice resources by Peabody (2013) and Mulder & Dull (2014).
• Using your Historical Analysis Worksheet from your Learning Resources as a guide, research and select one historical period after 1900. You can use the following resources from your Learning Resources as a starting point for your research:
o The Social Welfare History Project from Virginia Commonwealth University.
o The chapter by Glicken.
o The article by Ruth & Marshall.
o The article by Yingling.
o The article by Kemp & Brandwein.
• For this Assignment, you will use an adapted Photovoice technique. Instead of taking a picture, search online for an image that represents the social problem you have been examining in this course as it relates to the post-1900 historical time period you selected.
Assignment:
Submit your 1-page Photovoice paper submission:
• In 5–7 sentences at the top of the page, include the following:
o Identify the social problem you have been examining in this course.
o Identify the post-1900 historical period you have selected to further examine your selected social problem.
o Compare and contrast the social welfare response to pre-1900 responses.
• Paste into your paper or link to an image that you feel represents your social problem in this time period.
• Underneath the image, in 3–5 sentences, explain how this image reflects the climate—social, cultural, political, etc.—of the time period.
For your Photovoice submission, be sure to:
• Adhere to APA guidelines.
• Use evidence to support your claims.
• Include a reference list.
