Find an article (first published in the last 60 days) about some topic dealing with the control of cell division and/or cancer (chapter 11) addressing a hypothesis.
This can come from a newspaper, magazine or other periodical.
• Your source must be a periodical—not a static site such as a government report, policy statement, etc.
• News aggregators are not an acceptable source, nor are press releases.
• The article you use must have an author listed in the byline.
• Blog posts are also generally off-limits, since they are usually summaries of something rather than actual reporting. However, sometimes blogs are acceptable sources, so check with me if you find something interesting.
• No book reviews, movie reviews, etc.
• You may use primary literature (original research, for example) if you understand the article. These can be tough to understand, so if you don’t understand the article, find a different one.
Analyze your article in an essay of 600 words or fewer. You need to address the following:
• What hypothesis was tested?
• How was it tested?
• Was the hypothesis supported or rejected?
• Who sponsored the research? Is the sponsor of the science mentioned? This could be a university where research was conducted, a company that supplied funding, etc. Do you think the sponsor may have influenced the science? By that I mean do you think the source of funding could lead to a conflict of interest?
• What are some implications of this research?
• How to find out more information? What could you do if you wanted to find out more about the topic? Be more specific than “I could look it up in Google”. Tell me what you would actually do.
