This project will enable you to take a position on a controversial topic, build your argument, and try to convince your audience of the validity of your reasoning. You should choose 1 of the 4 following topics for your project. In organizing your paper, consider who your audience is and think about how you can use factual information (as opposed to personal opinion) to persuade them. Begin with a clear thesis that states your opinion. Then, support your position with factual information that you find persuasive. Finally, write a conclusion that ties up your argument and clearly reiterates your point. Unlike an actual newspaper editorial piece, you should document your sources.
You are a newspaper columnist, and you are writing an essay on an issue of American foreign policy. Write an editorial or op ed piece of at least 750 words (3 pages) on 1 of the following issues:
• Should the United States go to war in 1917?
• Should and how can the United States aid the Armenians (1915-17)?
• President Franklin Roosevelt just gave a speech calling for the quarantine of aggressors in 1937. What is your position on this issue?
• It is 1898, and Senator Redfield Proctor just gave a speech on conditions in Cuba. What is your reaction, and what would you propose as a course of action? This is the one I picked
Your project should take a position for or against 1 of these issues. You should use at least 3 outside sources (beyond the textbooks). While this is to be written in the form of an editorial or op ed piece, this is a class assignment and requires citations/footnotes and a bibliography of sources used in APA or Chicago/Turabian format.
