Dollar Tree: Integration of Family Dollar Acquisition

A project charter is a document that outlines the scope of a project to help teams understand components such as the purpose, objectives, tasks, and stakeholders. General managers use detailed project charters to align people behind the merger goals, as well as explain decisions made about goals, timelines, responsibilities and authorities, budgets, stakeholders, and limitations.

Charters also detail how future decisions will be made. The purpose of a project charter is to align all the functions and people toward clear goals, clarify expectations and limitations, and provide for coordinating mechanisms. To drive project and organizational performance and support organizational goals, you’ll design a project charter for the merger of Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.

Design a 2-3-page Project Charter for the integration of the 2 companies that includes the following components and information (use the bolded words as headings):

Title: Use the title Integration of Family Dollar Acquisition.
Purpose: Provide the purpose of the merger in terms of the strategic options and terms described in Ch. 4, “Planning and Strategic Management,” (from the case study and Dollar Tree’s publicity in 2014-2015).
Objectives: Determine 3 objectives for the merger and recommend how they should be measured.
Tasks: Create a list of 7-10 major tasks for the integration of the companies and estimate the time (weeks or months) each task will take.
Challenges: Develop a list of at least 5 challenges the project team should expect to encounter during the integration of the 2 companies. Include at least 1 challenge relating to corporate social responsibility.
Stakeholders: List at least 5 stakeholder groups. For each group of stakeholders, determine their top 1-2 interests or needs in regard to the merger.
Project limitations: Recommend 3-5 limitations for the project.
Authorities: Recommend what types of decisions must go to the CEO of Dollar Tree and what types of decisions can be made by the project team.
