Quality and Safety Improvement

Overview: The Part 1 Quality and Safety Improvement Project assignment includes the submission of 8 PowerPoint slides (Title (1), Problem (3), Theoretical Foundation (3), and PICOT Question (1)).

o Prepare for the Part 1 assignment by:
 Collecting information about the Problem
 Choosing a nurse theorist
 Formulating the PICOT question in collaboration with your EL faculty; Suggestion: Use the worksheet: Writing a PICOT Question Activity found with the assignment.
 Review the Part 1 elements in the example QI Projects in the Quality and Safety Improvement Project Resources file.

1. Problem element: These slides serve as an introduction to the QI Project. The Problem includes background including the type of clinical setting. The trigger slides are either problem-focused or knowledge-focused triggers. The background should describe the history of the problem in the context of the unit or department or organization. Is it a new problem? Is it a problem that has been addressed before? The priority bullet in the background explains to the audience why this particular problem takes priority over other problems at this time.
2. Theoretical Foundation element: This element consists of three slides: theory overview, theory concepts you selected (not all of the concepts), and an image or diagram that plainly shows the linkages.

The best way for students to link a nurse theorist to the project is by selecting just one or two concepts in the theory, identifying those concepts and showing how those concepts are linked to at least the Intervention and Outcome terms from the PICOT question.

3. PICOT Question element: See the rubric which describes each of the key components of the PICOT question (P-I-O-T). The Comparison is not used in a small project as used in this course, however, it is important to be aware that in future projects such as those at the graduate level or in practice may require a Comparison.
4. References element: References cited on the Quality and Safety Improvement Project slides must be included in the References list (a separate Word document) just like in a paper. Be sure your references and citations are in APA format.

For every reference cited on a slide, there must be a source in the references list and vice versa. If they do not match, valuable points will be deducted.

Other literature obtained but not used in the Quality and Safety Improvement Project slides may be added to the separate Word document in the form of a Bibliography.

A Bibliography is optional and is included as an option because it may be helpful for the agency to have one in their possession.
