This week proved to be significantly helpful insofar as developing my professional skills as a nurse is concerned. In this week I managed to interact with a number of my new colleagues in ways that enabled me to better understand the aspects of patient service delivery and clinical efficiency. It enabled me to better understand the various perspectives and issues that surround the provision of healthcare services to significantly large populations (Sines, Saunders, & Forbes-Burford, 2009). This is evidenced in the fact that I was able to understand how the facility operates insofar as providing adequate care to diverse healthcare populations with different cultural backgrounds was concerned, as well as to understand the impact of proper health care provision in facilitating the overall health of the general population (Page & Institute of Medicine (U.S), 2004). I also learnt that it is important to consider the design and structure of the facility and its protocols insofar as the delivery of healthcare services to the population is concerned. They need to be structured in a way that enables nurses and other professionals to provide services in a seamless and relaxed manner.
This week proved to be significantly helpful to my development as a nurse insofar as understanding the role of interprofessional collaboration is concerned. This week, I managed to interact with a variety of other healthcare professionals such as physicians and specialists and I was able to discuss with them the impact of professional collaboration on the delivery of healthcare services in an efficient and reliable manner (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). Such collaboration is important to all the players involved and perhaps is arguably the most important aspect in so far as providing health care services is concerned (Niles, 2018). This is based on the fact that most patients require healthcare services from professionals with different specialties, which demands effective collaboration and communication in the process. Nonetheless, it was also apparent that interprofessional collaboration is a unique and important feature in the provision of healthcare service delivery in this as evidenced by my interaction both with professionals and patients in my facility (Sines et al., 2009). I believe that this will be critical to my development as a nurse. Provided I can articulately communicate with other professionals and build a strong working relationship, i believe that I can be the best nurse that I can be.
This week proved to be one of the most interesting in so far as my mentorship was concerned. It’s because I had the opportunity to visit the labor and delivery department in my hospital facility, which was unique and life-changing experience. By witnessing the full range of services that nurses and other health care professionals facilitate for expectant mothers and their newborn infants, I was taken aback by the significance of such services and the importance of fulfilling and playing one’s role as required. The range of services that expectant mothers and newborn infants demand is significantly large, and this calls for effective communication, proper collaboration, and perfect execution (Shi, 2007). Nonetheless, I was able to understand how facilities promote his collaboration through aspect such as team building exercises in bonding activities among the relevant staff to ensure that they are not only working towards the same goal, but that they are also enjoying a strong working relationship among themselves. I found this to be significantly important and I believe it will further contribute to my development in my future practice (Niles, 2018). In the same line, I was lucky enough to visit the lactation specialist to discuss some of the aspect surrounding the delivery of newborn infants and the promotion of breastfeeding from the start. I managed to learn that it was important to facilitate skin to skin contact between the infant and the mother as soon as possible after birth in order to not only develop a strong bond between mother and child but also to facilitate exclusive breastfeeding. This was one of my most impactful experiences as a nurse and it helped me to better understand the importance of my job and the role that it plays in the healthcare delivery complex.
This week I had the opportunity to revisit the lactation specialist in my facility. This experience has been significantly impactful for me the previous week and I looked forward to the meeting. During the meeting, we discussed plenty of issues surrounding lactation for infants and one of the aspects that really struck me as being important was the issue surrounding the environment. The lactation specialist made it abundantly clear that it is important to maintain a calm and neutral environment that promotes lactation among infants, and especially so soon after birth (Shi, 2007). I believe applying this in my future practice will enable more infants and mothers to enjoy the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding soon after birth as well as develop strong bond due to the skin to skin contact that this approach also promotes. It is also worth noting that this week provided me with an in-depth analysis and perspective on understanding the impact of health care policy (Page & Institute of Medicine (U.S), 2004). By assessing the contributions of healthcare policy on the aspect of lactation for mothers and infants, I managed to understand that health policy plays a significant role in promoting any healthcare service delivery as well as healthcare benefits for the society. In this sense, I believe that it is important for nurses to actively take part and engage in the promotion of beneficial health policies in order to not only achieve their health goals but promote public health.
My mentorship this week proved to be quite beneficial insofar as understanding the relationship between health and technology was concerned. I was lucky enough to visit a significant number of departments within my facility that rely on technology such as the oncology department. My experiences with the staff and in some cases the patients of this department enable me to appreciate the full range of benefits that incorporation of technology into healthcare service delivery provides (Shi, 2007). From aspects such as blood assessment to more complex issues such as body scanning, I was able to experience the full range of healthcare services that rely on technology in order to be effective (Sines et al., 2009). At the same time, I also managed to examine the benefits of a reliable electronic health record system within the facility, and particularly so insofar as the management of patients and their healthcare conditions was concerned. It was abundantly clear that having proper and relevant technology within the various healthcare departments plays a significant role in making the work of nurses and other health care professionals easier (Niles, 2018). Incorporation of technology into healthcare is the direction of the future and is a concept that modern healthcare must fully embrace in order to be more effective at providing healthcare services to the general population. In essence, this was a very interesting week for me oh, and one that will significantly affect the trajectory of my nursing profession in the future.
This week, I was privileged to return to the labor and delivery department for a second time. This week however, I was more focused on assessing the positive development of infants depending on the environment that they were subjected to and how this affected the ability to exclusively breastfeed (Shi, 2007). From the start, it was abundantly clear that many infants tend to effectively and more exclusively breastfeed when they are in a calm and neutral environment that supports bonding between mother and infant. In this sense, infants are that hard individual rooms with their mothers tended to be more willing to be exclusively breastfed for continuous periods of time. At the same time, it was easier for such mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants while still bonding with them as opposed to mothers that were in general wards. I think the knowledge I learnt during this week will prove helpful in so far as my futures and answers concerned (Page & Institute of Medicine (U.S), 2004). I believe it will influence how I perceive the aspect of breastfeeding, and the role that environment plays in it. In this way, I hope to improve the ability of mothers and infants to significantly bond with each other as a result of their environment while at the same time promoting exclusive breastfeeding in the coming future.
This week I had the opportunity to interact with most of the staffing leaders my facility. I think this was one of the most beneficial experiences that I have had in so far as my mentorship is concerned. This is because this experience allowed me to understand the unique perspective that leaders need to have insofar as managing their staff and the facility is concerned in a way that promotes efficient service delivery and professionalism (Sines et al., 2009). It is also clear that many leaders in the various departments well especially keen and the economic model of the hospital. This enable them to better plan their departments and ensure that their departments were not only efficient at service delivery, but also operated within the economic limits of the hospital while still promoting profitability and sustainability for the future (Shi, 2007). I was also able to learn the importance of adequately managing the human resource in any organization. Proper planning, effective communication, and professionalism appeared to be some of the main concepts that leaders in the various departments working on emphasizing (Niles, 2018). This enabled them to better manage their workforce while avoiding the negative and orphan detrimental challenges in healthcare service delivery such as burnout. This was a true eye-opener for me, and I believe the insights I gained during this week will help me to become a better nurse manager in the future and leader in the present.
Considering this was my last visit to the labor and delivery department, i was both excited and sad about the visit. I was sad because this will be the last opportunity for me to experience the aspect of health care service delivery insofar as the labor and delivery department is concerned during my mentorship. Considering I am passionate about promoting efficient service delivery for expectant and new mothers, as well as their infants, I wished I could learn much more but this was not supported by the time constraints. However, the insights I gained proved to be effective during this week, seeing as I was particularly focused on patient satisfaction (Sines et al., 2009). It became clear that patient satisfaction in the healthcare labor and delivery department as a by-product of proper planning and careful attention from the relevant professionals. The patients that I had the opportunity to spoke to overall satisfy to the way in which healthcare service delivery was provided, and many of them especially enjoyed the attention to detail that they were afforded within the facility (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). I believe that it is important to ensure patients are always contented with the services that they pay for, and paying attention to their needs, however diverse they may be, is one way of achieving this. I plan on applying this knowledge in the future to ensure that I am capable of effectively managing nursing staff in ways that promote patient satisfaction at all times (Shi, 2007). At the same time, I learnt that it is important for healthcare facilities to consider the various health disparities not only in the patients that they serve, but also in the community in which they are located. This enables them to effectively plan their service delivery in an efficient manner, which was the case with my facility.
Ethics has always been a divisive issue, in particularly so whenever morality is involved. However, this week proved to be different insofar as my expectations are concerned. It is a natural tendency for individuals to associate ethics and morality, which is not the case oh, and especially so when a business is involved. None the less we can understand the importance of considering the medical and clinical ethics of service delivery in the health care system and how these affect patients, professionals and their families (Grinspun, Bajnok, & Sigma Theta Tau International, 2018). The fact that my facility paid significant attention to observing ethical practices augmented my ability to differentiate ethics and morality. It enabled me to understand that it’s making ethical decisions in the healthcare setting is about meeting the healthcare needs of the patient in the most ethical way, and is not necessarily based on what the society considers to be right or wrong. This reshaped my understanding of ethics and the role they play in healthcare (Niles, 2018). At the same time, I admit that understanding the ethics of health care service delivery is not achievement that can be accomplished within one week. This is why I plan on constantly reviewing health care practices and methods of service delivery to ensure that I understand the ethics behind them. I believe this will enable me to become a better nurse and a better leader in the future.
As the final week of my mentorship, focused on understanding the role and importance of developing and applying new practice approaches in the health care setting. Healthcare is a constantly transforming sector and all professionals working in it must make sure they keep abreast of changes and new developments within it (Sines et al., 2009). One of the main aspects that really resonated with me insofar as this issue is concerned of the implementation of a fully functional and reliable in electronic health record system. From my observations, it is clear that such a system facilitates smooth operation within the facility and is a concept that should be embraced by all healthcare facilities (Niles, 2018; Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). At the same time, I learnt that the environment in which patients are placed can have a significant and direct implication on their healthcare. Going into the future, I plan on keeping abreast with the relevant developments and changes in healthcare service delivery as well as healthcare protocols to ensure that I am an efficient, capable and competent nurse that consistently facilitates healthcare service delivery for my patients and who promotes general development and efficiency for my facility.
