This is for my observations that I have to video tape myself teaching these lessons. I will need 1 more under different topics. 1 for either math or ELA, or social studies. However, I just want you to work on this one for now.
Please write a lesson plan and create PowerPoint slides to go with that lesson plan for 6th grade SOCIAL STUDIES class.
Please use the lesson plan template to write the lesson plan. This is attached under the files section called “Social Studies Middle School Lesson Plan Template”
Please use this website for the standards for NY SOCIAL STUDIES:
https://www.nysed.gov/sites/default/files/programs/curriculum-instruction/ss-framework-k-8a2.pdf
6th grade standards start on page 79 and end on page 87. Please only use those pages for the standards.
This is all of the 6TH grade social studies standards. Please use only these standards listed. You must have 3 standards on the lesson plan and use those 3 standards for the lesson.
The lesson would have to be social studies and under the I DO, WE DO, YOU DO, then a share out, what did they learn or wonder, and an exit ticket.
For this lesson she wants me to teach them a new strategy that they do not know how to do. I will leave this up to you. This is a new unit and lesson for them. Many of them do not know anything about China.
My co-teacher supplied this lesson and slides I will attach CALLED “My CO-TEACHERS LESSON Unit 5 Ancient China Slide Deck” under the files section. However, I do not like how the slides look and I cannot use what she is doing for the class. She has them working on Google Earth for part of the lesson. I DO NOT want them using their laptops for any of the lesson because some of them will play games on a different tab and that will show in the video. So, this lesson will have to have them completing worksheets.
Her plan is here: Hello!
Below are the details of the lesson that I plan to teach on Wednesday. You can totally modify this lesson in any way that you think may be beneficial for your recording!
Lesson: Ancient China’s Geography
Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between the geography of Inner & Outer China in order to determine which region was best for human settlement.
Slides: This lesson will be using these slides “. These slides contain the Do Now, as well as the content for the lesson. This includes;
• The differences between Inner & Outer China’s geography & climate
• How these geographic differences impacted lifestyles for humans living in Inner & Outer China
Activity: For the activity, students will be taking a “virtual field trip” around China using the slide deck attached below. They will be checking out 5 different geographic features including 2 rivers, The Gobi Desert, & Himalayan Mountain range. As students read about each geographic feature, they will have the opportunity to check it out via google earth and will answer questions based on each geographic feature. At the end of the slide deck, students will answer an exit ticket in which they identify why Ancient China’s geography was suitable for human settlement.
YOU CAN USE some of this, but not all of it. I do think geography does need to be included in the lesson.
The first slide MUST be a cover page saying 6TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES class and an aesthetically pleasing image must be added. The second slide MUST have a Learning Target there and below that a DO NOW. The DO NOW must be a question that they will answer before the lesson.
The lesson will be on 6th grade social studies introduction to ancient China. This will be the first lesson in the unit.
Their independent work you will have to create worksheets and an answer key to go with the worksheets for their independent work. I have 1 advanced student in the class, and I will need work differentiated up for him. I will also need those worksheets and answers keys attached at the end of the lesson plan for him.
All worksheets, answer keys, and work that they are doing needs to be added to the end of the Lesson plan.
These websites below have a lot of great examples:

I attached a textbook I found online under the name “Ancient China Textbook.pdf” There is a lot of useful information there that you can use in the lesson.
I found these slides below online. The file is too large, but you can download it as a PowerPoint presentation and I believe you can sent it back to me. These slides are really beautiful. If you can use them and just change things around to fit my lesson that would be awesome.

For the lesson, you will model how to do something pertaining to the lesson you create.
Please embed a video into the Lesson plan showing the students a video on ancient China. You can add one on their geography and whatever else you think is important.
The following slide will be the group work that they complete. This can be a worksheet that you create.
Then the independent work will be additional worksheets that you create along with an answer key.
The final slide will be the exit ticket slide.
The class is 47 minutes long so all of this would need to be incorporated into that time frame. The lesson plan I will supply you with the template in the files section under “Social Studies Middle School Lesson Plan Template.doc.”
I would do a demo of it then we would do it together and then they would do it independently. There will have to be a slide toward the end with share out on what they learned and wonder and additional slide with an exit ticket as well.

On the lesson plan template on the top of it is the heading “observation 3, and the makeup of the class. Please leave that as she requires this. Also, below where it says time 5 minutes do now, 10 minutes activity, and 5 minutes closing all of those you have to keep. That totals 20 minutes, you will have about 27 minutes to distribute between Lesson Synthesis and Lesson Cool-Down. You can distribute this at your discretion. Just make sure whatever you have me teach and the slides I can do in that timeframe as I will be recording this for my masters.
Also, any activity/handouts that they are working on in class will need to be attached here. She requires all activities/handouts and answer keys to be attached as she will need to review them.

You must incorporate all of her comments under the “Next Steps” column in the lesson. You must have:
Sit in student groups and see how the students are doing.
Allow flexibility in student grouping,
You can use timers that beep so they know what is next. Use a name wheel to call on students. Wheelofnames.com. Transition each section of the lesson with a slide that tells the next section is coming.
You must have a few stations set up for the students that were getting out of their seats, I’m not sure if they were finished or transitioning to something else. Example a science vocabulary activity or build a question bank that you can post.
