Classical and Operant Conditioning

Three basic forms of learning can be applied to explain how we have learned virtually everything we have ever learned.
• Classical Conditioning
• Operant Conditioning
• Observational Learning or Modeling
The videos and reading from your OpenStax textbook Ch.6 along with the accompanying assignment provide a great overview of these learning theories as well as evidence of these learning processes in everyday life.
Assignment – Chapter 6 – Learning Theories

The following assignment is linked to the course competency: “Distinguish learning theories”.

By successfully completing this assignment you will: describe various learning theories, differentiate among different types of learning and apply learning theory to everyday life.

Please use your textbook Ch.6, the following video and any additional sources of information to answer the questions. Be sure to answer all parts of each question.

1. Substantively define or describe learning (from the psychological perspective).

2. Consider the process of operant conditioning, learning behaviors based on their consequences. In regards to the schedules of reinforcement, substantively describe or define the fixed ratio reinforcement schedule. Provide an example of how or when this schedule is or might be used.

3. Provide one real world example of how or when observational learning (modeling) might impact our lives. In your example, identify and explain (in detail) the steps in the process per Bandura’s model (attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation). Also identify and explain (in detail) the type of consequence (vicarious reinforcement or vicarious punishment) the respondent experiences.
