W4A1 Theory
For this assignment, you will develop your theoretical concept for your practicum.
This is the first assignment that goes into your final project. Taking the information from last week’s Theory discussion question, show why and how the choice/s fit into your topic.
This paper is in APA format, does not use personal pronouns, and websites are acceptable references.
This paper will be approximately 1-3 pages. Quality and succinctness are important factors in developing the theory.
Project Topic: “What Keeps Diversity Numbers Low in Nursing and How Does Health Policy Need to Implement Change?”
Contingency Leadership Theory
According to this notion, a leader’s approach should change depending on the circumstances (Shala et al., 2021). For instance, a leader may adopt a directive stance during a crisis, providing precise orders and expectations; conversely, a more laissez-faire attitude may be more suitable in a stable setting.
I will be using the Contingency Leadership Theory in my paper, which will allow me to adapt my leadership style to the needs of the group and the organization.
Last Week’s Theory Discussion Question: Post your theory, why it is chosen, and how it will contribute to your topic.
My Answer to the discussion question:
When reviewing the ongoing lack and low diversity in nursing and its impact, I based my analysis on the Contingency Leadership Theory. As proposed by Shala et al. (2021), such theory suggests that good leadership is determined by its contextual dimension, recommending flexibility in leadership styles. This theory is selected because it can be applied to the challenges faced in the nursing profession, especially concerning diversity.
The Contingency Leadership Theory naturally fits the complexity of healthcare environments so that leaders can adjust their strategy according to the specific needs of a given situation (Xu, 2017). Within the scope of my research question— delving into what contributes to a low-diversity population in nursing— this theory helps me look at leadership’s role in nurturing inclusion from another perspective.
This theoretical framework will be precious for my project as it will allow me to conduct a more nuanced analysis of how leadership impacts the numbers regarding diversity in nursing. The Contingency Leadership Theory highlights how leadership styles can change, thus making practical ideas more visible (Xu, 2017). For example, in such cases as critical situations or crises, a more directive leadership style could become necessary to address immediate diversity-related issues; alternatively, in more stable settings that might need a laissez-faire style of governance where nursing teams are empowered to initiate diversity interventions on their own.
The chosen theory is also helpful in making intuitive recommendations on strategizing health policy that will permit some form of change (Xu, 2017). Through comprehending the adaptability needed for Contingency Leadership Theory, policy recommendations could be adapted to advocate leadership training programs that prepare healthcare leaders with skills to acclimatize to different challenges confronted by nursing teams.
The Contingency Leadership Theory provides a solid theoretical basis for my research on low diversity numbers in nursing (Xu, 2017). Not only that, its focus on situational suitability and plasticity will illuminate the problem’s fundamental causes and guide leaders and policymakers who want to achieve substantial reform in healthcare diversity.
