Instructions
For this assignment, connect one or more of the learning concept(s) from class thus far (chapters 1 through 14) to a media source. The media source may be a book, movie, podcast, or song. Other media sources must be approved by the instructor.
Following review of your media source, using the specifications given below, write a brief two to three page paper identifying how the media source connects to the learning concept(s)/topic(s) you’ve identified.
The Review Write-Up
- Title and type of media (if a book, podcast, or song, include the author, interviewer, or artist).
- Short paragraph synopsis of your media (consider this a concise summary to acclimate me to the ‘story’).
- Identify and analyze which specific learning concept(s) are connected to the media source:
- Identify the concept(s).
- How the concept(s) are exemplified in your media. Explain how the concepts are used.
- Whether the media accurately portrayed the learning concept(s) (and if not, how should it/they have been portrayed).
- One new learning you gained from making these connections.
- The identification and use of concepts from the course in your writing need to be accurate.
Formatting of Review Write-Up

Instructor’s Notes Chapter 8
The Nature of Knowledge
Memory is such a complex phenomenon that we often resort to metaphors in an attempt to understand it. If we use the metaphor of a storage building, Chapter 7 explained how we move new items into storage and how we find (or fail to find) something we’ve stored in the building when we need it. Chapter 8 explains how the storage building is organized inside.
We could also use a similar but more modern metaphor of a hard drive. Using this metaphor, Chapter 7 explained how new information gets written to the hard drive and how we “read” information from the hard drive. (Sometimes you just can’t find that file you’re looking for!). Chapter 8 explains how the hard drive is organized. Chapter 8 informs you how information is stored in long-term memory so you can help your students do just that. It will also give you ideas on how to promote conceptual change (which can really be a challenge).
As you read ask yourself the following questions:
• What are the different types of knowledge?
• How do people learn concepts?
• What are schemas and scripts and how do they influence learning?
• How do people development misconceptions?
• How can conceptual change happen?
• How has the myth of learning styles in education persisted over the years?
