This assignment aims to develop and assess your ability to:
- Evaluate and exploit published teaching materials, online resources and authentic texts.
- Match materials and methodology to learners’ needs.
- Design teaching activities of various types for advanced students.
In order to achieve the above, you are expected to:
- Evaluate a published coursebook – Investigate and evaluate an advanced coursebook using the sample provided. Write a short essay to comment on the coursebook. Say if it is suitable for the level of targeted students. And explain why you personally would, or would not, like to use this book with your class.
- Select an authentic text for a specific class – a text for a comprehension lesson that was originally aimed at native English speakers and was NOT created for teaching purposes. Make sure that the level of the text is appropriate for the level of the student class. This should be 500-600 words and a 4-5 minute speech if you are submitting a listening text. Do NOT select sensitive topics, songs, or very academic/specialist talks. If you are using a listening text, the second step is to transcribe the text, simply write out the words. If you are doing a reading text, then you must also provide a copy of it. See further instructions below
- Highlight 12 items in your specific text for pre-teaching from the comprehension lesson. You may use a vocab profiler to select the items for pre-teaching. Select the words that are key to understanding the text and look out for whole phrases too (not recognised by profilers).
- Design 3 teaching activities to further exploit your selected authentic text after using it for a comprehension lesson. See assignment instructions for the types of activities you need to design. You must submit all handouts and. visual aids you would use in the lesson. For each activity you must state the aims of the activity, estimate how long it would take, and explain what the teacher has to do.
- Write an essay on using Authentic Materials and the Internet in Language Teaching. Write the essay in 4 paragraphs under the heading specified in the instructions
- Bibliography – use a minimum of 4 references but add more where required and use the checklist to reference them appropriately.
Present your work in the 5 templates provided and ensure you’ve fulfilled the entire checklist before you submit.

**Select and exploit an authentic reading or listening text (not a song) for this advanced class:
A mixed-nationality general English class of 15 Advanced C1-C2 adults (9 women, 6 men, ages 20-40 years) living /studying in an English speaking country.
Four of your students have university places for the next academic year and want to improve their fluency in preparation. Two are married to people from the host country – one is at home with a young child, and the other works in a restaurant. Four are work colleagues who have been sent by their company to work in this country for a year. The other five have come on short-term visits specifically to improve their English.**
Please also make good use of visuals to make the lesson/activities more engaging and easier for students to understand what they are required to do. State why your choice of activities and materials is appropriate for this age group and use the level of language in the lessons/activities that is also appropriate for this age group.
