A Comparative Exploration of the NFL and MLB

As professional sports organizations are often confronted with challenges and crises that demand immediate decisions, crisis management is an important skill they must possess. A recurring headache for sports leagues is handling player misconduct and scandals. Links two case studies of prominent sports leagues facing players’ problems, focusing on the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball’s (MLB) handling of misconduct looming over their heads. This paper aims to determine, by examining the nature of the problems encountered and their decision-making styles and comparing approaches taken in general, which organization’s response fared better than others.
Identified Organizations and the Nature of the Issue
The NFL and MLB, among the most well-known and wealthiest sports leagues on earth, have each faced challenges regarding players’ off-field conduct. There has been a series of recent incidents, such as domestic violence, substance abuse, and unethical behavior, that have raised strong concerns among fans, sponsors, and the general public. The attack by Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice on his fiancée in an elevator in 2014 came to light and posed a severe challenge to the NFL (Wire, 2014). In 2015, MLB faced the same dilemma when domestic violence allegations came to light against All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman of Cincinnati’s Reds (Kepner, 2015).
Decision-Making Styles
The approaches and intensity with which the NFL and MLB reacted to these incidents differed considerably. Concerning Ray Rice, for example, the original two-game suspension handed down by the NFL was widely panned as too light a punishment because of his misconduct (Sessler, 2014). With public outrage mounting, the NFL reconsidered its decision. For subsequent examples of domestic violence, the policy will be more severe; for instance, first-time offenders face a six-game ban, and repeat offenses are at risk of leading to a lifetime suspension. Faced with charges against Aroldis Chapman, MLB took a proactive stance and thoroughly investigated the matter. MLB presented a strong message to its ranks that domestic violence would not be tolerated, carried out by an extensive investigation and a heavy penalty of a 30-game suspension. Further demonstrating a severe commitment to prevent and deal with these kinds of problems, introducing league-wide policy served as an about-face from the NFL’s initially reactive position. Eventually, both leagues realized their overconfident initial moves had been wrong, so the merit of what they did afterward can be evaluated according to how much impact it would have on either organization in particular or future incidents in general.

Examining the outcomes of actions by the NFL and MLB makes it evident that success depends on how well one has managed to deal with a crisis. The NFL’s revised policy on the issue and handling of other cases involving player misconduct suggest it has a more profound commitment to dealing correctly with such matters than was previously apparent. On the other hand, MLB has been praised for its aggressive attitude and determination to create a more secure environment on both sides of the play. This implementation of domestic violence policy has taken the absence of any significant player misconduct incidents together with it, all of which have resulted in a favorable view of how well the league deals with such problems.

MLB’s proactive approach and commitment to safety make it the best at addressing this issue. The NFL and MLB have made progress in addressing player misconduct, but MLB’s approach is more forceful and effective. These events showed that professional sports organizations must continuously improve their crisis management processes.
