Students are required to write a 3- page essay (not including title and reference page) on a current, federal, state, or city government policy issue. You will choose a specific representative to write to on the issue. Make sure to present arguments as to why it’s important and recommend a course of action to solve the issue. This will be done in the style of a letter to an elected government official, your state representative or senator, or local legislator. Tips on Investigating Political Issues
Politics is the process “by which values are authoritatively allocated for a society; a method of deciding who gets what from the government.” Furthermore, “a subject becomes an issue after the attention of policymakers is drawn to a problem that requires government action.” Issues are rooted in controversy; there are multiple positions about what action best resolves the problem. These positions can represent many different beliefs, values, and attitudes.
From the academic perspective of this course, a political position should be based upon facts as well as legal and historical precedents that can be documented by references. It should become clear that political issues have been part of our American/State and local governments from its foundation to the present.
Your assignment/ letter should focus on an issue that addresses a current problem at the national, state, or local level. Finding a problem in today’s political environment will not be difficult. Just spend a few days attending the national, state, or local news on television, the radio, and in print. It will be important to decide on the scope of the issue. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be sorting out any bias in various sources of reporting. Never hesitate to ask your professor for help, and search out other experts on the topic.
