Resume Writing

This assignment is comprised of several parts. You will review the Saint Leo University Career Planning website, create a beginning resume or curriculum vitae, establish personal and career objectives and describe them in a personal statement, and create your initial psychology portfolio that will be used to document your performance in the major.
Instructions
You may have written many cover letters and resumes before, but do not submit an old cover letter and resume that you have used in the past. Instead, “pretend” you are applying Social Services: Counselor for your undergraduate degree in psychology and that you have acquired the necessary skills, experiences, awards, etc. needed to do so.

  1. Write a one-page personal statement of your career and personal goals. This statement should include information about your experiences as well as a reflection of your interests and values.
  2. Consider relevant skills and accomplishments. Think about the accomplishments and skills that you should have developed as a psychology major that are relevant to that internship (Hint: look at that qualifications section of the internship listings).
  3. Review some resources. These resources will not only help you with your portfolio assignment, but can also help you prepare for your career.
  4. Tailor both a cover letter and resume to the specific internship as if you have achieved those accomplishments and skills. Include any relevant psychology classes, any relevant internship, and any additional, relevant skills, awards, etc. Do not include irrelevant work experience (e.g., sales clerk, waitress, manager of restaurant, front desk clerk, etc.). Instead, list important experiences and skills that you should have developed as a psychology major. Be sure to include your career and personal objectives as well.
    You must include these elements:
o Qualifications (List any specific skills that you possess)
o Previous relevant employment (List positions and dates of employment)
o Volunteer experience (List relevant positions and dates that you volunteered)
o Extracurricular activities (College and High School)
    o Awards received/Hobbies and interests
Feel free to construct a chronological or functional resume. Examples of each are provided in the Kuther textbook and in the Resources section.
