Question 1

Resources: Articles I, II, and III of the Constitution located in Appendix A of Constitutional Law

Write a 3 to 4 page essay that addresses the following:

• Identify the separation of powers between the three branches of government. Discuss how each branch checks and balances the other branches.
• Select a current event or issue from the past five years. Possible areas include: health care reform, presidential appointments, and national security, for example.
• Discuss how the separation of powers and checks and balances affect this issue.

Cite at least four references to support the content of your paper.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Question 2

Read the U.S. Supreme Court opinion in the case Edwards, et al. v. South Carolina. This is a court ruling which finds a state action contrary to the U.S. Constitution. One justice disagreed with the ruling and his dissenting opinion is also included.

In three paragraphs – describe the facts of the case; describe what constitutional right(s) the court found to be relevant; and describe why the court found the right(s) to be violated.

1. Do you agree with Hamilton’s economic plan? Why? If not, why?

2. What do you see as being one of the key provisions of the Constitution or the biggest compromise made? How do you still see the impact of that today?

3. Were the Alien and Sedition Acts necessary?
