Students will be required to select from the following U.S. law enforcement agencies; New York City Police Department, Suffolk County Police Department, New York State Police Department, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, or the United States Marshals Service. Students are assigned to conduct research into several aspects of the agency. One 6-page research paper will be prepared by using full sentences and paragraphs, in-text short citations, and a separate “Sources of Information” page which will contain all sources utilized for the research.
- History of the selected law enforcement agency, including how the agency was created and evolved, the agency’s employment requirements, steps in the selection process, entry-level training process and probationary period.
- The agency’s pay scale, promotional opportunities (both supervisory and investigatory ranks with salary increases), retirement system and benefits packages.
