Learn about computer applications in your major field (or some other field that interests
you) and write a report describing what you have found. You may consider a broad range
of applications in the field you choose, or you may focus on a specific subfield or a
particular type of application.
Note: This report is about how computers are being used, not just about the computers
themselves. For example, a discussion of a new chip-manufacturing technology would not
be suitable for this assignment — unless you can also discuss how that technology opens
up new areas of application.
The details of the report will vary, depending upon the specific field you have selected. In
general, the report should include information such as the following:
• How are computers being used to solve problems in this field?
• How have computers changed the work that is being done in the field (for example,
in terms of speed, thoroughness, accuracy, or even the type of work)?
• What specific hardware and software packages did you learn about?
Besides this factual information, it is also important to include your own personal
assessment. In this area, you may want to address questions such as
• Are computers being used effectively in this field?
• Are there ways they might be better used?
• Are there potential abuses or potential concerns about safety or privacy?
Your paper should be approximately 2500 words in length, and should reflect college-level
writing standards of organization and clarity. It should include a minimum of four relevant references, with appropriate citations in the body of the paper. Depending on the area, you
may find reference materials in a variety of places. If you can find someone in the field to
interview, that can be a great place to start (and it will count as one of the references).
Citations of any material that you find on the Internet must include a valid URL. Please
note that Wikipedia articles are not acceptable as scholarly references. (Among other
things, Wikipedia articles are not signed, which makes it difficult to evaluate the author’s
qualifications and motivations.) The references in Wikipedia articles can be helpful in
