As we have seen in class, there are numerous political cleavages that define politics in Canada. The Liberal government of Justin Trudeau has repeatedly stated that it wants to unite Canadians rather than focusing on the politics of division.
We know, however, that there is a growing wealth divide in Canada. In fact, a recent report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, concluded that “Canada’s 100 highest paid CEOs netted 209 times more than the average worker made in 2016. Canadian CEOs are again taking home pre-2008-crisis levels of compensation, pushing the income gap between Canada’s top executives and the average worker to record highs.” Examining this report, students are asked:
➢ Why is the income gap growing in Canadian society?
➢ And, how does income inequality intersect with other cleavages discussed in class, including region, race, gender, and class?
