Critical Book Review:
A critical book review as I am defining it is one in which you will read the text with a “Critical Eye” applying your knowledge to the book. In this case, your knowledge of child development as you have acquired it both experientially and through your work in this study. Apply developmental theory and research findings that you have learned to the information in the texts.
“Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl” (with an introduction by Eleanor Roosevelt)
The method is that you read for comprehension and analysis–like you would the material for any academic learning, but applying developmental theory and research. You might want to keep notes on your ideas as you read. Then write this up in a 10-12 page double spaced formal paper. That means you will be expected to use citations to the book you are reading, if you quote from it, or any source such as your textbook, that you use to clarify or support your ideas. Be sure to include a final reference page with correct APA style.
For full credit I would expect you to
Review the text in a concise manner;
Complete in-depth analysis and application of at least one theorist (Erikson, Maslow, Piaget, etc.);
Apply 3 primary sources (books/articles written by the theorist);
Apply 3 additional theorists/concepts as appropriate (such as family relations or physical development); and
Use correct APA style in your references and writing indicative of an advanced level course.
That being said, everyone will be drawn to different concepts from the book. This is expected and makes for an interesting discussion. If you are unsure where to start visit the discussion again, read the portions of the text that relate to children in this age range and read portions of the book again. What strikes you?
