Include everything we have covered since the beginning of the semester, up to and
including tourism demand (Modules 1-4).
Be familiar with the following items:
- What is tourism and what are its components?
- Approximately how much is spent each year by tourists?
- How is tourism measured?
- Who are tourists and excursionists?
- Be familiar with the basic data about tourism in Arizona. (not numbers but patterns)
- What are the top few markets for Arizona’s tourism?
- What are the most visited states in the US?
- Be familiar with basic US tourism patterns.
- Be familiar with basic global tourism patterns (i.e. what are the top five destination
countries?) - What are the most visited and least visited regions in the world?
- Be familiar with tourism and its foundation as an academic area of study. How do each of
the disciplines contribute to understanding tourism? - Understand the primary reasons for growth of tourism since the Second World War.
What are they? What causes them? What are their components? - Be familiar with the historical periods (e.g. ancient era, Roman Empire, Persian Empire,
modern era, etc) and how each of these influenced the modern development of tourism. - Understand the various spatial development models in relation to destinations, such as the
TBD, RBD, distance decay at coastal resorts, etc. - How could these models be useful planning tools?
- Be very familiar with Butler’s Curve, or the destination lifecycle model. Pay special
attention to its phases and the phases’ characteristics. - Controlled tourism development—we talked about Bhutan in this regard. How is Bhutan
controlling tourism’s impacts? What about the Maldives? - How do we define a type of tourism? What are the two variables that make a type of
tourism? - Be familiar with the various types of tourism discussed at great length in the course.
- In terms of transportation, understand the history/background to the development of air
travel and cruises. - Be familiar with the airline sector issues (e.g. deregulation)
- What are the issues and trends associated with rail travel (why is it popular in Europe but
not in the US, for example)? - The PPTs talked about different types of lodging and the quality and range of lodging
options. Be familiar with all those issues, such as timeshares and what is entailed with
those. What are the characteristics and trends associated with each type of
accommodation? - What are some of the new trends and futuristic trends going on in the lodging sector?
- The course deals only a little with food services, but re-read those notes as well.
- What types of food services are important? What about international foods, etc?
- Understand the two types of seasonality and how they manifest in tourism.
- What are the major motives for travel? Why do people travel, or why don’t they travel?
- Be very familiar with all the barriers to travel and the four-phase travel experience.
- Know the allocentric-psychocentric tourist experience/motive model and how it
manifests in where people go, what they do, and their position in life. Understand also
how destinations can change in relation to allocentricity and psychocentricity.
