Your task: rewrite Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried
Your task is to rewrite Tim O’Brien’s novel as an editorial for The New York Times
Requirements
1-For the sake of this assignment, you are Tim O’Brien. As such, you must maintain his voice (i.e. his language, his mannerisms, his style) and you must maintain his motives (i.e. his purpose for writing the novel).
2-BUT – instead of writing an entire book to achieve your purpose, you will be limited to a 2000-word editorial.
3-Additionally, you must consider the constraints of an editorial. This genre is much different than that of the novel, or the short story, or fiction in general.
4-Further, your audience will have shifted. (Unless the folks who read The Things They Carried are the same folks who read The New York Times …..?) Yes, there will be some overlap in audience, but as good rhetorician, you must be aware of these nuances!
5-If you’re feeling uncertain, consider reading sample Op/Ed pieces to gain a better understanding of the genre you’re about to plunge into.
