According to the dramaturgical approach, one aspect of social interaction involved presentation of self. We engage in this activity every time we interact whether we think about it or not. Erving Goffman argued that rather than simply creating an impression as we presented ourselves, we could actually control the impression. This is called impression management. To encourage you to think about the process of presentation of self and impression management, please do the following:
Select a situation in which you might interact.
- Describe the characteristics of the situation. What type of situation is it? Who is present? etc.
- Describe an impression of yourself that you might wish to make in that situation.
- Describe, in detail, how you would present yourself in that situation to produce the desired impression. How would you dress? How would you act? What would you say? How would you say it? etc.
- What problems might you encounter in creating your desired impression and how would you overcome those potential problems?
- If you create an impression that is different from the way you typically are is that impression dishonest? What do you think?
