PAUSE & PRACTICE: EXCEL 8-1

In this project, you open and save a macro-enabled workbook for Perfect Vacation Rentals. You enable macros, run a macro to enter the date statement, and record a macro with absolute references.

File Needed: PerfectRentals-08.xlsm (Student data files are available in the Library of your SIMnet account.)

  1. Check macro security and show the Developer tab.
    1. Click the Options command [File tab] and select Trust Center in the left pane.
    2. Choose Trust Center Settings and click Macro Settings in the left pane.
    3. Verify or select the Disable VBA macros with notification button and click OK. (Corporate and early Excel versions may display Disable all macros with notification.)
    4. Click Customize Ribbon in the left pane of the Excel Options dialog box.
    5. Select the Developer check box in the Main Tabs list and click OK.
  2. Open the PerfectRentals-08.xlsm workbook from your student data files and click Enable Content in the security warning. (You may not see a warning if you have previously enabled macros in this work session.)
  3. Save the workbook as a macro-enabled workbook.
    1. Click the File tab and select Save As.
    2. Navigate to your folder for saving files.
    3. Edit the file name to [your initials] PP E8-1.
    4. Verify the file type or click the Save as type arrow and choose Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (.xlsm).
    5. Click Save.
  4. Run a macro.
    1. Select cell F1. The InsertDate macro was recorded with relative references so you must position the insertion point before running it.
    2. Click the Macros button [Developer tab, Code group] to open the Macro dialog box.
    3. Select InsertDate in the macros list. The description for the macro explains what it will do.
    4. Click Run to insert the date statement.
    5. Note in the Formula bar that the macro has inserted a nested CONCAT function.
  5. Record a VBA macro with absolute references.
    1. Verify that the Use Relative References button is not selected [Developer tab, Code group].
    2. Click the Record Macro button [Developer tab, Code group].
    3. Type Welcome in the Macro name box.
    4. Click the Shortcut key box, press Shift, and type w. The keyboard shortcut for the macro is Ctrl+Shift+W.
    5. Verify that This Workbook displays in the Store macro in box.
    6. Click the Description box and type Display welcome message. (Figure 8-10).
    7. Click OK to begin recording.
    8. Select cell F2. This is the first step in the macro, to move the active cell to cell F2.
    9. Click the Home tab and click the Bold button [Font group].
    10. Click the Italic button [Font group]. The macro will apply bold and italic.
    11. Change the font size to 14.
    12. Type Welcome to PVR! and press Enter. This action completes the label and moves to cell F3.
    13. Click the Stop Recording button [Developer tab, Code group].
  6. Test the macro with the keyboard shortcut.
    1. Select cell F2.
    2. Click the Clear button [Home tab, Editing group] and choose Clear All to delete the label and the formatting.
    3. Select cell F7.
    4. Press Ctrl+Shift+W to run the macro. The macro inserts the message in cell F2.
  7. Hide the Developer tab if instructed to do so.
  8. Save and close the workbook (Figure 8-11).
