1. Review A Short Guide to Writing About Art Pgs. 37-131:Chapter 4, Analytic Thinking. This is posted on Blackboard under “Course Resources” and it was part of your assigned reading. Chapter 4 starts on pg. 69. It is a guide on how to analyze an artwork, whether it is a painting, sculpture, photograph, piece of architecture, etc, so do not skip it!!!!!!!
2. Choose an artist and artwork that you are interested in writing about. If you are not sure who you wish to write about, peruse your textbook for possible artists, ask your professor, or view ART 21 videos on youtube for some ideas. Write a brief paragraph to yourself about why you wish to write about the particular artist and artwork that you have chosen. *** Do not pick an artist that you will not be able to find comprehensive information on.
3. Search for viable resources on the artist/artwork and create a “Tentative Bibliography” page (refer to “Research/Footnotes/Chicago Manual of Style”(pgs. 270-344 of A Short Guide to Writing About Art), which is also posted on Blackboard under “Course Resources.” Be sure to include a book source and a periodical/magazine source; Not all of your sources should be internet based! You will need two to three references.
4. After reading each source take good notes, also include your initial free thoughts from ideas that come to you when you look at (and read about) the work, and organize a rough outline to help you figure out what you will discuss in your paper. For example you may find a critical review written about their exhibition/artwork. Perhaps you can look on the artist’s website and get acquainted with other works that may help you to understand what kinds of materials the artist tends to use, the consistent themes they explore through art making and a little about their background. Select background information that helps you to understand the work better. When you are conducting your research and writing please address each of the following with at least two or more specific examples:
form: how it is made, imagery that is in the work and its visual elements, principles of composition, the artist’s process, and working methodology. The materials, media, images, etc. they consistently use.
content: What are the ideas, themes, concepts being explored, how does the formal aspects of the work support its content and vice versa? Is there a specific event, piece of literature, or other artistic influence that fuels the work?
context: In what kind of social, political, historical era was the work made and how might that affect the decisions that the artist has made in the work? Is the work indicative of a specific art movement? Are there other factors and background story that informs the reader about the works?
5. Write your paper. It should be 3-3.5 pages in length (your image should be placed after the essay).
6. Edit your paper, and check for:
• Spelling, grammatical, and sentence errors.
• Sufficient evidence to support your statements.
• Strong use of visual description for your formal analysis that employs the visual elements and principles of composition (such as emphasis unity and variety, volume, line, color, mass, etc.).
• Do you identify the style or various styles employed by the artist (such as abstract, representational, Minimalist. Impressionist)?
• Do you have a clear thesis statement? Is your paper in essay format with a clear
beginning, middle, and end?
• Did you identify the art movement this artist may be identified with? What are the characteristic themes and ways of working of that movement? How does your selected artist emulate or distinguish themselves from that particular art movement?
• Did you relate the title of the artwork to your formal analysis?
