For this assignment, students will choose one of the nursing theorists (Orem, Roy, or Neuman) from the readings and apply the theory to the student’s chosen role stressor situation.
Section 1
Define professionalism in nursing (30 points). Discuss the value/importance of professionalism in nursing practice (30 points) and the importance of maintaining a good public image of nursing to professional practice (30 points).
Section 2
Utilize the White Library databases and perform a related literature search. Select one of the common role stressors (you may use a combination of search terms that include the different roles of nurses and the stressor):
- Role Overload (example search terms: role overload/critical care nurses) • Burnout (example search terms: burnout and ED nurses; self-care/burnout) • Compassion Fatigue (example search terms: compassion fatigue/nurses/professionalism)
Describe the characteristics in general and give examples of how it applies to nurses in real life situations. Include mental, physical, emotional, and/or psychosocial characteristics of each role stressor. Characteristics (physical, mental, emotional) symptoms of the role stressor must be described in detail, cited and referenced (30 points). Explain why self-care is important to maintaining professionalism in nursing (30 points).
Section 3
Select ONE of the nursing theorists (Orem, Roy, or Neuman) from our readings and apply the theory to your chosen role stressor situation (refer to the three role stressors in Section 2, above). This is not a care plan as assigned in Weeks 4, 5, and 6; this section requires use of the theory methods, concepts, and language of how the nurse assesses the stressor and chooses interventions based on the framework, methods, and language of your chosen theory.
Roy’s Adaptation Model
- Affected Mode: Physiologic – Physical, Interdependence, Self-Concept, or Role Function
- Stimuli: Focal, Contextual or Residual
- Interventions to manage stimuli and promote adaptation
- Assess affective modes and manage stimuli (address focal, contextual and residual) and state interventions that will promote adaption in all three modes.
Neumann Systems Model
- Affected System: Physiological, Psychological, Sociocultural, Developmental, or Spiritual
- Stressor: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal or Extra-personal
- Interventions to maintain system stability: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary
- Assess the affected systems and each type of stressor. Identify primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions to maintain or restore system stability.
Orem’s Nursing Self-Care Deficit Theory
- Affected Requisite: Universal Self-Care, Developmental Self-Care, or Health Deviation Self-Care
- Level of Nursing Care: Wholly Compensatory, Partly Compensatory or Supportive- Educative
- Assess the three requisites to determine which are affected; determine the level of nursing care needed; and identify interventions, according to Orem, that to help achieve improved self-care capabilities.
Use the key concepts, language, and methods of the theorist’s model to assess the role stressor situation as included below.
What type of methods/ways (interventions) should be used to alleviate the role stressor? Use the language, methods, and concepts of the theorist included below.
Section 4
answer the following questions:
- Why is the above theorist a good choice? Is the theory easily applied to the stressor?
- Identify the value of the model and how it is applicable to practice.
- Is there any conflict in this theory from a Christian perspective?
Other paper requirements:
- Length: 7-8 pages (total pages do not include title page and reference page)
- APA (6th ed.) format, with a minimum of 3 references
- Written in the third person
- Reference Ackley and Ladwig’s Nursing Diagnosis NIC for interventions
- All references should be 5 years old or less
- No .com sites are acceptable (.edu., .gov or .org are acceptable)
