Multilingual Personal Essay or Research

Description
In this project you will use personal experience, research, and creativity to convey a message about
language, multilingualism, and/or communication. As with all academic essays, you will have a focused
topic and a thesis (explicit or implicit), but you will go beyond the basic essay form by using creative
elements such as narrative to appeal to your readers, by including researched sources, and by incorporating
other languages or language varieties into your text. The class readings such as those quoted above should
give you some ideas about what this type of text looks like, and student examples will be posted on
Blackboard. This paper is the last major assignment for this class and should be an extended work of no
fewer than 2,000 words.
You have a choice in writing this final project: present your work in a research paper or in a personal essay.
As you make your choice, think about your goals for this final College Writing class and your own strengths
and weaknesses as a writer. Are you still unsure of some of your research paper skills and want to deepen
your practice using multiple sources, citation systems, more traditional organization and transitional
devices, etc.? Or do you feel comfortable in these areas and want to push your ability to take more creative
risks in your writing? I encourage you to move out of your comfort zone and take this opportunity to
explore those writing skills that you most want to improve.
