This analytical paper will be a 975-1700 word (4-7 pages) essay incorporating a variety of sources to analyze the following question:
How “progressive” was the Progressive Era for multicultural America?
The paper should be a comparative study of the different aspects of multiculturalism that include race/ethnicity, class, and gender.
In analyzing this topic and formulating your written response, some things you may want to consider include the following: How did changing conceptions of race/ethnicity, class, and gender inform social movements in American history? What did it mean to be “progressive” in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century? How did different multicultural groups experience Progressivism and were there differences based upon race/ethnicity, class, and gender? These are a few thoughts to consider as you formulate your own interpretation, which is not limited to these issues (nor does it have to incorporate all of these concerns).
The paper should use an academic style of writing, and contain footnotes to cite any indirect and direct quotes. Footnotes should follow the format outlines in the Chicago Manual of Style (also known as Turabian). The paper should contain the following minimum number of footnotes from applicable sources (no maximum number):
- minimum of two footnotes from each of the documentaries (6 total minimum): Making a Way Out of No Way (1897-1940):The African Americans—Many Rivers to Cross [segments 1, 3-19]; Empire of Dreams (1880-1942): The Latino Americans [segments 5-14]; and Becoming American: The Chinese Experience— Between Two Worlds [segments 7-13]
- minimum of one footnote from either African Cherokees in Indian Territory or Not Quite White
- minimum of one footnote from the article “Overview of the Progressive Era,” Digital History source
