Media And Crime

The last two weeks we have learned about how the media socially constructs claims, frames, and narratives about crime and justice events and problems. We also learned how this construction can vary by race/ethnicity and gender of the criminal, especially when it comes to mass shootings.

Prompt

Pick ONE mass shooting within the last three years to focus on for this assignment. The following ABC News summary covers mass shootings in 2019, but you can definitely pick a more current event. Select ONE shooting incident and identify TWO news sources that discusses the shooting. [NOTE: There are hyperlinks within the description of each shooting that can take you to news sites with local coverage].

After selecting your shooting and sources, please answer the following prompts. Be sure to DEFINE THE BOLDED CONCEPTS/TERMS when answering a prompt:

1) Describe the shooting, including location and # of victims.
2) How does the article describe the suspect and event? Do you think that these descriptions fit within any of the pre-existing narratives about mass shooters/shootings identified in Duxbury et al?
a. NOTE: You need to identify what these pre-existing narratives are when answering the question – do not just say yes or no.
3) Are any established frames used to explain why the shooting happened? If so, what are they? If not, what frame would you offer to explain why the incident took place?
a. Note: Surette offers 5 frames in the textbook, but these are not the only frames that exist. Duxbury et al, also offer the frame of mental health.
4) Do you think that the article provides a neutral assessment of the event? Why or why not? Be sure to use evidence from the article to support your claim (E.g., quoted excerpts)

Please be sure to include links to the articles you used at the end of your analysis.
