Managing and Focusing an Outbreak Disease

Part 1 of 2: Focusing on a Disease
Instructions
To complete this activity, use the Internet and textbook references to find THREE reliable sources about a transmissible disease outbreak in a health care setting.
Texbooks:

  1. Friis, R. 2021. Epidemiology for Public Health Practice. 6th edition Jones & Bartlett.

Step 1
Choose any transmissible disease to focus on. This disease you focus on should be a transmissible disease of concern in Indiana or area of interest. (This disease will be further researched in Part 2’s “Managing an Outbreak.”)
You may choose to reference your county or US State Department of Health (DOH) as well as the CDC website to narrow your focus. As an option, you can also choose to use one of these websites to narrow your focus to a disease of concern near you:
https://healthmap.org/en/
https://outbreaks.globalincidentmap.com/
https://www.who.int/data/gho/map-gallery
Step 2
Write a 1-2 page report to an audience of interest in which you do the following:

  1. Identify and cite at least three relevant and reliable sources of data an epidemiological manager would consult when managing this outbreak.
    • You may consult any reliable Internet resources as long as they are less than 5 years old. This may include reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or the World Health Organization (WHO).
    • Your resources should also provide a clear and concise summary of the data and results.
  2. Summarize the major findings on the disease. Include a table in the report from at least one of your resources that includes that report’s data.
    Rubric:
  3. Identified three relevant and reliable sources of data, none older than 5 years, that you would consult when managing this outbreak.
  4. Summarized the major findings on the disease from one of the resources into the epidemiological report. Included a table from the report that includes that report’s data.
  5. Used three peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment part.

Part 2 of 2: Managing an Outbreak
Overview
Using the selected disease researched in Part 1, you are tasked with developing a data-driven plan to improve patient outcomes from a transmissible disease outbreak scenario in a typical US health care facility.

Instructions
Using the selected disease researched in Part 1, Write a 5-6 page paper in which you do the following:

  1. Evaluate three possible epidemiological approaches you might utilize to manage the chosen outbreak.
    • Be sure to compare and contrast your chosen approaches.
  2. Recommend at least six steps in a plan that may be presented to an audience of interest to prevent the proliferation of this particular disease.
    • Be sure to include support for recommendations.
  3. Use at least six peer-reviewed academic resources (this may include the three sources from Part 1) in this assignment. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. These sources must be less than years old. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment.
    Rubric:
  4. Evaluate three possible approaches one might take to manage the outbreak. Compare and contrast the approaches.
  5. Recommend six steps that may be given to a current or previous place of employment to prevent the proliferation of the disease. Provide support for the recommendations.
  6. Use six peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment part (three of which are also used in Part 1.)
