The use of standardized intellectual and memory tests, such as the Wechsler scales, are the most widely utilized measures among psychological testing professionals in clinical practice as part of a psychological assessment battery. However, performance on intellectual and memory measures are well-known to be influenced by many factors, including quality and extent of educational experiences and language. As such, it is vital that a competent advanced behavioral health professional understands that intellectual and memory performance is so much more than just a score and that performance must be interpreted utilizing normative standards and the available clinical literature on the population.
Although intellectual and memory testing has been critiqued by some in the field about their use in certain clinical contexts, discuss what factors must be considered in the interpretation of performance on such psychological measures across patient populations.
