For this field research assignment, you will critique TV shows marketed to children, identifying program content that models aggression (physical or relational), prosocial behavior, and/or gender-typed behavior.
Specifically, each student will watch a total of at least four different television shows. Watch at least two shows marketed to preschoolers (children ages 3-5) and at least two shows marketed to elementary school age children (ages 6-11). For each of the four programs, conduct a content analysis in which you answer each of the questions below. You may organize your thoughts in outline or list form, detailing each program one at a time. (For example, first you will answer questions 1 through 4 for the first TV program you watched; then you’ll answer questions 1 through 4 for the second program. You will repeat this process for the third and fourth programs you watched.) Note: Please start a new document (rather than simply writing on this one and saving it) for your content analysis.
- For each program give: the name and length of the show, the network that broadcast it, and the age group to which it is geared.
- Analyze the characters’ dress, interactions, and activities, and note specific things the characters wear, say or do that model aggression, prosocial behavior, and/or stereotypical gender roles. For each show list several specific examples of each type of behavior. (See pp. 193-200 & pp 206-210 of your textbook for information on these topics.)
- Note whether the “plot” of the program encourages aggression, prosocial behavior, or gender- typed behavior. Is there a lesson or moral at the conclusion of the program? If so, what is it?
- Do the child characters interact with adults in the program? If so, how would you describe that
interaction? What does children’s TV programming teach kids about adults?
In addition to completing the content analysis by answering the above questions for each TV program in outline or list form, write a more formal reflection paper (3-4 pages at minimum, organized in complete sentences and coherent paragraphs) summarizing your findings. In your reflection paper, compare and contrast the shows geared toward early childhood with those for middle childhood with regard to aggression, prosocial behavior, gender roles, plot, and portrayal of adults. Finally, discuss the potential implications for children who watch these shows frequently. Be certain to include a References page including the full citation information for the textbook (if you cite it) and each show you watched. (Remember: if you do the “minimum” work well, you can expect to earn the “minimum” passing grade, which is a C. If you want to earn a higher grade than a C, you must do significantly more than the “minimum.”)
Be sure to upload both your content analysis (in outline/ list form) and your formal reflection paper to Moodle
In addition, please bring hard copies of whatever notes you need for reference when you share your findings with the class (since you will not be able to access your computers during class).
Have fun revisiting the shows from your childhood or dabbling in current programming for kids.
