- Site Selection: Choose a cultural site from the Cultural Sites list, preferably one you have already chosen from previous assignments. Each site represents a unique history and culture. For this project, you’ll research your chosen site in depth, covering the points listed below in the Content Focus section.
Cultural site is OLD SAN JUAN - Content Focus: Structure your project using the following headers:
- The Site: Provide detailed information about your chosen site including a full description and its location.
- Site Background: Include the history of the site and provide a comprehensive historical overview of the site by focusing on who created it – be it an individual or a group – and the motivations behind its inception.
- Cultural Significance: Explain why the site is culturally significant today. Why is it considered a cultural heritage site? Discuss local traditions, customs, and practices connected to it. Consider why it’s important to local or national culture, how it reflects values and traditions, and its role in promoting cultural pride.
- History and Future: History and Future is about what the site is, how its purpose and function have changed, and what might happen to it going forward. Describe the site’s current function. How has its use changed over time? What future factors might impact the site, and how? Have any of these factors affected it? war, environment, economics, crime, protest, politics, technology?
- Cultural Transmission and Diffusion: Cultural Transmission and Diffusion is about the cultural elements associated with the site. Describe how the site’s cultural elements have been passed down through generations and how they’ve spread to other regions or cultures. Also, discuss how outside cultural influences have changed the site or its purpose. Consider factors like trade, migration, belief, globalization, social media, and tourism.
- Influence on the Humanities: Explore the contributions related to the site in humanities fields such as literature, film/tv, music, dance, visual art, or architecture by listing specific examples connected to it and explaining how they relate to the site.
- Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage: Identify and distinguish between tangible (physical artifacts, monuments, buildings) and intangible (oral traditions, performing arts) cultural heritage associated with the site.
General Presentation Requirements:
• Format: Multimedia presentation (e.g.: PowerPoint with narration or script, document with images)
• Images: the project must include a minimum of 5 images.
• Links to an external site.Length: This will vary with format, but aim for 10 slides in a PowerPoint presentation (with 5-6 minutes of narration or a 600 word script) or 600 words for document presentation.
Research and Sources:
At least 4 content references are required (not to include visuals). Use reliable academic sources to support you analysis. Include in-text citations within your work and a reference list at the end of your project per APA 7th edition guidelines.
The research for this project should be interesting, while the goal is to obtain and share high quality, credible information. Here are some ideas to help you with the research process:

• Locate the official website of the cultural site. This is often the best stop for the history of the site.
• Run a search for the name of the site and “cultural heritage.”
• Watch videos or listen to podcasts about the site to get as close as possible to the experience of visiting in person. When searching on YouTube or social media, prioritize official, government, academic, and non-profit sources, accredited local guides, tourist boards or experts, and credible organizations like National Geographic.
