General Psychology

Attitudes toward obesity have varied widely both across and within cultures at various historical times. There is evidence that this cultural variation is giving way to an increasing weight stigma, even in cultures around the globe that have previously had very positive values attached to larger body size. Yet at the same time, demographics and health research indicate more and more people across most cultures are becoming obese at an alarming rate.

Do you think the spread of negative views of people who are overweight or obese is a good thing or a bad thing for these cultures? Explain your answer from both a physical health and also a psychological health perspective.

The second half of your Discussion Board assignment will be your response to another PSY 1010 classmate in Unit VII. Be sure to include the name of the person or question to which you are replying in the subject line. For example, “Tom’s response to Susan’s comment.”

TINA:

Well this is a subject all to familiar in my life.  This is something that I personnal battle with pretty much my entire life.  I have been on both sides of the fence a few times.  Younger years on the obesity side, last 15 years, mainly on the health/slim side to standing on the fence leaning to one sides more than the other.  I think the negative spread of people that are obese is a bad thing, physical and psychological health perspective.  People that are obese, their physical well being is affected by the wear and tear they are putting on their bodies.  From the joints carring extra weight causing them to wear down early on, or completly being destroyed, example like knee replacement.  Internal organs under so much pressure to keep up with the extra weight.  Like the heart, the heart is a muscle.  If you would run, your muscles in your legs will get tired because of the extra exertion that you are doing.  Well, it is pretty much the samething with the heart, it will eventually get tired too.  Not to mention of all that quick fix, fast food is doing to your overall health.  The way those types of food will drag you down, tired.  Psychological perspective, negative views will have a person in depression, low self estem, have them hiding from the world.  This never goes away, a person will remember this for the rest of their life.  In which could cause them to have a negative attitudes back towards the rest of the world.  I think views of a person body image should not be a view at all; it should be about a person health.
