  1. Assessment criteria
This assignment should be written as an essay not a report and must be typed (please use font 12 and line spacing of 1.5). You must address all of the above questions in no more than 5,000 words. There is no marking beyond 5000 words. It must follow standard academic writing conventions in terms of referencing.

Appendices will not count towards the word limit. However, material that is in appendices will not be marked. That is, appendices cannot be used to overcome the word limit by including in appendices material that should be in the body of the essay.

Advice on the structure of the essay

The essay should include the following.

• Introduction – a brief outline of your chosen country and the aims of this essay.
• The main body of the text – this should be structured along with the three questions.
• Conclusion – a summary of your answers to the questions.
• Reference list – full references for sources used in the essay. NB There should not be a bibliography. All the material in the reference list should be referred to in the text of the essay.
• Appendices (not marked).

Assessed Learning Outcomes by Coursework
Module learning outcome description
LO1 Demonstrate an understanding of the context in which international business operates and how it impacts on business policy and development.
LO2 Synthesise and appraise theories of internationalisation of the firm and different modes of internationalisation and relate them to actual examples of business practice.
LO3 Evaluate CSR and cultural issues in an international context.
LO4 Analyse and critically evaluate a range of data to address key issues in international business, including issues relating to globalisation and global governance.

Successful completion of the learning outcomes will depend on, in particular, WHETHER YOU FOCUS UPON AND ANSWER THE QUESTION SET. Those of you who merely talk about the topic in general will not achieve the higher grades.

Attention paid to the following will determine how well you meet the learning outcomes and thus will help you enhance your coursework grade:
• Conciseness and relevance: Do not spend so long setting the background, that you never get round to answering the question. Always ask yourself how and whether what you are writing helps you answer the question. Make sure you actually answer the question or just talk around the subject of the question in a general way. Remember you have a limited word limit and this is good discipline in terms of forcing you to focus on the question.
• Knowledge: show familiarity with the context of your questions and use pertinent examples where appropriate to demonstrate your arguments.
• Clarity: layout, structure and expression.
• Analysis and argument: a well-integrated, logically argued, internally consistent piece of work; development of your own ideas based on a wide range of literature and sources that have been critically analysed and assessed.
• References: your work should be fully referenced. The Harvard System is the recommended referencing system. If you have any doubts on this matter, please consult the Business School’s Study Skills Handbook.

In assigning a grade to your coursework, tutors are guided by the following:

80+: Excellent analysis throughout with a very strong and complete focus on the question. Development of own ideas based on an extensive range of relevant literature and sources that have been critically analysed and assessed and are fully referenced and sourced. Strong evidence of ability to set answer within a broader context and to apply theory to specific scenarios or examples. Overall, an outstanding, well-integrated, logically argued and internally consistent piece of work.

70-79: Analytical throughout. Strong and thorough focus on the question. Development of own ideas based on a wide range of literature and sources that have been critically analysed and assessed. Must be properly referenced and sourced. Demonstration of ability to set answer within a broader context and use of pertinent examples where appropriate to demonstrate more general principles. A well-integrated, logically argued, internally consistent piece of work.

60-70: Significant evidence of wider reading and clear identification of problems raised by the question. Critical discussion of most key areas of the question that makes good use of the literature.

50-60: Will cover many of the key areas but could be some omissions and some minor errors. A broad understanding of the subject area but possibly some confusion, inconsistencies or errors.

40-50: basic, incomplete answers with limited evidence of further reading. A broad understanding of the subject area but possibly some confusion, inconsistencies or errors.

Below 35-40: limited reading. Absence of critical, analytical thought. Relevant theory absent or present only in a very limited form – application of theory to examples is therefore non-existent. Superficial understanding and treatment of the question with errors and omissions.

Below 35: limited reading. Absence of critical, analytical thought. Relevant theory absent or present only in a very limited form – application of theory to examples is therefore non-existent. Little understanding and treatment of the question with several errors and omissions. The lowest marks will be for answers that fail to address the question at all.
