1. Comment on Eisenstein’s cinematography. Eisenstein was a master of frame composition and favored what he called the “dynamic square” over wide screen formats. Discuss the way he framed images — landscapes, architecture, close-ups of faces, etc. — the way a painter would compose a picture. Also, comment on his Expressionistic use of lighting.
2. Discuss the use of music in Ivan the Terrible. How effective is Prokofiev’s original score in evoking moods and characters?
3. As the story of Ivan the Terrible is presented here, how justified would you say that Ivan was in taking the courses of action that he did throughout the film?
