His mother, Teresa, is a single mother of three children. She works the 11 pm to 7 am shift as an aide in a nursing home. Teresa and her children moved here a year ago from El Salvador. Teresa speaks some English, but Spanish is her first language.  The family lives with Teresa’s brother, his wife, and their two teenage sons.

  • Explain how you would begin building a collaborative relationship between yourself and the family and conduct the assessment to ensure that the assessment is culturally competent.
  • Consider cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic factors as well as other dimensions of family life and structure.
  • Organize your answer by the three primary strategies for developing collaborative relationships during assessment:
    1. Pre-assessment planning
    2. Active participation by family members and other caregivers in assessment
    3. Mutual sharing of assessment results and planning for intervention
