Event Planning

Description

Please review the event concepts of at least 3 others, adding constructive comments they may choose to use. Comments such as “I like your idea”, or “I like the wow factor” are nice, but not constructive. What might you add or change (and why?) to the overall proposal? It is great to be supportive (please do), but additional ideas are what we are after here.

Purpose: Seldom do you do an event solely by yourself. Ideas from others are a part of the process, and learning to give and take such ideas is a valuable part of event planning. The comments don’t need to be accepted, but they should demonstrate an overall understanding of what the proposer is trying to accomplish.

CriteriaRatingsPts

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProgram conceptThis gives a description of the general idea and theme of the event being considered. What sort of event is it? This doesn’t need to be lengthy but it needs to be more than a few word description (“a gala”, “a fundraiser”, etc., is inadequate).

The description demonstrates that the concept has been thought through, and is “doable”. The parameters of the event are within the guidelines issued (in the syllabus and presented in class); in other words, a one-day event, in one location, with no more than 2500 attendees, nor less than 45 attendees, and not a wedding; no celebrity appearances., etc.) This does NOT mean unusual or unique programs are to be avoided; in fact, those are most preferred as they demonstrate creativity in the concept development. Admission fees (if applicable), the “wow” factor of the event, dates and times, and number of attendees being planned for need to be included.

Most concept elements are appropriate

Program is acceptable, but with some problems in size, scope or focus. Note that those receiving such a grade may revise in order to achieve full points.

0 pts

No Marks

Program proposed is not “doable” or would require a budget that is not practical. Program size is too ambitious (multiple-day, thousands of attendees, etc.).

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeProgram ObjectivesWhat are the objectives and purpose of the program? What are you attempting to achieve? What result would result in the program being considered successful?

20 pts

Full Marks

The program objective is clear and whether the program is ultimately successful is measurable. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the success needs to be numerical (attendance, money raised, etc.) but may be a qualitative evaluation (satisfaction of the client, surveys of attendees, etc.)

10 pts

Objective is partially defined

The program objective is unclear or does not match the program concept. There is no way to determine the success of the program.

0 pts

No Marks

Objectives are non-existent, or so broad that measurement of any kind would be impossible.

15 pts

Full Marks

At least two viable venues are identified which have the size and practical location to successfully host the event.

10 pts

Restricted applicability of venues

Only one venue is listed, and/or the venues would be able to host the event described only with major modifications.

0 pts

No Marks

No venues are identified, or the venues listed are impractical/impossible to host an event as described in the program concept.

Full Marks

The client is identified and is appropriate for the program being proposed.

0 pts
