For this Essay, you will research and write on a topic related to the first two units of our course, Heroes are Born or The Rise of Religion.

The topic you choose is your choice, but should be one you can do academic research on—Wikipedia is not to be cited in your essay.

Here’s some suggested research questions to get you started:

1. What mythological gods or goddesses moved from one pantheon to another around the world?
2. Why did the Goddess societies fall?
3. Why do humans need religion?
4. What music/ art/ dance was being created during this time period?
5. Who are the most significant historical people of this time period?
6. How did democracy rise?
7. Where did the Indo-Europeans come from?
8. How did humans move from Africa into other parts of the world?
9. When did the first humans move into North and South America? Australia?
10. How do myths move from one part of the world to another, and how do they change?
11. Are there female tricksters?
12. Why did the Persian/ Akkadian/ Babylonian/ Greek/ Roman (any period, actually) fall?
13. What is the process of mummification used by the ancient Egyptians?

These are just ideas—what is a topic related to the first two units that you are interested in exploring in more depth? It doesn’t have to be one we covered in class—for example, there are several civilizations developing during this era that we haven’t covered, such as those in South America and the Far East.

Essay requirements:

• Grammar and spelling count
