HR: Managing Change in the Modern Workplace
Select a company in which you are very familiar. This should be an organization
in which you currently, or have previously, worked. After selecting the company,
you will identify a problem in which you want to fix. This will require a change in
the organization. You will utilize the outline below to create a change
management plan for the company. You do not have to actually implement the
plan at the company, or even consult the company in any way, but it will be most
beneficial for you to keep it as realistic as possible. This will make it most
applicable to the real world of business.
· Your finished plan should at least 5 pages (NOT including a cover page,
reference page, and appendices).
· The finished report should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, 1
inch margins, and typed in a word document.
· The project will be submitted through the online “Turnitin” system to check
for originality.
· APA style will be required for format and citations
· The project should follow the basic outline given below. Each section in
the outline below is required in the plan. However, students are allowed to
add headings/sections as they see fit. My directions in blue are designed
to be deleted and replaced with your text.
Background of the Company selected: I worked for a software company were
we sold software for tax preparers and did technical support. This company was
a family owned company supervised directly by the owner. This company aside
from offering their own software they also owned a bank where they processed
the bank products of the tax preparers for their customer. The bank product was
offered for a fee of 59.99 to tax preparers. Out of this fee, the owner of the
company kept 80% for every processed bank product made by the tax preparer.
Aside from gaining profit of the sales generated for the software itself, the
company was also making money using the bank. I started working for this
company when it was still in good shape in 2014-2016. Shortly after I started
working for the company, the sales started to decline. The company only had the
management team working all year round. During tax season from November to
April a group of people were brought in to provide technical support to tax
preparers that included getting their software installed in their computer and
getting them signed up with the bank. Unfortunately we started coming across
many scammers that bought our bank product services and used them for

making tax related frauds. The system that used for background checks on this
“tax prayers” was not as strict to detect the scammers. We started to receive
supenas from the IRS, which the owner invested majority of his time causing the
sales to decline and the prestige of the bank to decrease among tax preparers.
Due to the problems with the bank and glitches in the software, we started
receiving complaints from the tax preparers, which created unhappiness. We lost
many customers that refused to renew their services with us and in the matter of
2 years, we ended up losing 80% of our customers. The company was not
generating money and the owner was forced to file bankruptcy and to sell the
rights of the software and bank. A 3 billion a year company disappeared in a
matter of two years. I was promoted within my first year to the sales manager
and unfortunate I discovered that the people working in sales and technical
support were extremely lazy and not motivated mainly because the old manager
was so laid back and nice. When I finally wanted to make the team work I was
not successful since they thought they were entitle to work at their own pace.
Unfortunately I was not able to change their ways which didn’t help the situation.
They were basically their just for the paycheck. This is s a brief description but if
you need, more information to complete the assignment let me know and I will be
happy to share more details with you.
Change management plan outline
1) Executive summary
the executive summary section should be written last. An executive at
your company should be able to read this section only and have a
adequate synopsis of the entire contents of your report.
2) Overview
a) Target audience for this document
Think about who will be reading this. Is it your boss, upper
management, your peers, another department, or employees under
you? It may be all of the above, but you need to keep in mind who your
audience is when you write any plan.
b) Change Diagnosis
Explain the reasons the change is needed. Chapter 3 does a great job
covering ways to collect data for change management in an
organization (ie: questionnaires, interviews, observations, etc).
HR: Managing Change in the Modern Workplace
Change Management Plan 3
You need to develop at least ONE data source, like a questionnaire for
employees, and include it in the appendix, and reference it in this
section (and others if you wish). See chapter 3 for details.
*Page 63 has an example of an Organizational Diagnostic
Questionnaire. Also see the Survey Hacks Cheat Sheet in the “project
supporting docs” folder in Joule.
c) Objectives and measures for success
Detail what the project will achieve.
3) Change management approach
This section includes a brief description of each step to present your
overall approach.
a) Sizing the change
How large is the change? Who will it affect and on what scale?
b) Assessing the current organization
Provide a general description of where the company is at now. (You
may include the Org. Chart, culture, technology, professional
development, budgetary concerns, etc.)
c) Change management strategy
What are the main elements in the change plan? [eg people/culture,
systems/technology, documentation, positions/roles, process, skills].
You may explain your approach, for instance, creating
“disequilibrium”, creating “dissatisfaction”, and/or creating a “trigger
event” (all of these concepts come from the textbook).
Each of these elements may require a particular focus in the change
implementation section.
d) Drivers and constraints
List the drivers and constraints for change.
What are the risks for the change process?
e) Team structure and responsibilities.
HR: Managing Change in the Modern Workplace
Change Management Plan 4
Here you can discuss your change management team. How will you
develop this team and what are they responsible for? You may also
refer to org chart (or develop a chart) for this section.
f) Sponsor roles and responsibilities
This person leads the change project and is accountable for ensuring
the project and change plan are implemented
g) Key stakeholder Analysis
Identify the key stakeholders [consider staff, other work units in,
management, unions, and other clients/customers. Identify their needs
in terms of change management. You may do this in the form of a
table… See below (there are good examples online).
4) Change management implementation
Insert actual plans for each section here.
a) Communications plan
Identify the preferred media for communicating or consulting with
your key stakeholders about the change [i.e. sessions involving
dialogue about the changes, newsletters, briefings from project team
members, frequently asked questions,].
See example below from the UQ Blackboard Project example. I highly
recommend creating your communication plan in this format.

b) Key Change Messages
Identify about 6 key messages to convey about the change process,
being upfront about gains and losses. Consider:
• The messages from the stakeholder perspective;
• What will be their main concerns?
• Presenting changes in a positive light even whilst
acknowledging loss.
c) Coaching plan
What will be gained/lost for the key stakeholder groups in the change
process?
d) Resistance management plan
Chapter 1 provides a detailed look at employee resistance. Create a
plan (ideally a proactive one) that will minimize resistance altogether,
and deal with resistance when it occurs. Topics here may include:
Building collaboration, creating teamwork, organizational redesign,
and others
e) Training plan
This will be a large part of your plan. You will want to discuss a lot of
things here, including but not limited to: experiential training, people
alignment (chapter 5),
f) Schedule of activities
This will provide the timeline with key dates and milestone.
HR: Managing Change in the Modern Workplace
Change Management Plan 6
Create a PERT or GANT chart and include in appendix.
g) Incentives and Celebrating successes
Chapter 6 has many key concepts for “Reinforcing new Behaviors”
5) Assessing the results
a) Feedback, Evaluation, and Analysis
How will the change be evaluated in relation to the achievement of the
planned objectives?
How will the change management processes be evaluated – consider
summative as well as final evaluations, how can you assess your
change management strategies as you implement them?
How will the evaluation outcomes be circulated and promoted to
stakeholders?
How will evaluation outcomes be used in other organizational
processes?
*You need to create one sample data source (ie: survey, process map,
etc) on how you will do this. Please include in your appendix and
reference it here.
b) Corrective action plan
Develop a contingency plan for modifying the original plan if the
original plan fails to some degree. How will this decision be datadriven?
c) After Action Review (AAR) summary
Here is a great website to explain what an AAR is, and how you may
implement a plan for AAR in your company.
http://betterevaluation.org/en/evaluation-options/after_action_review
6) Budget
HR: Managing Change in the Modern Workplace
Change Management Plan 7
Create a budget for the change management plan. Your costs do not need
to be precise, just try to think about the expense (or savings) to the
company and estimate to the best of your ability.
*see sample budget in project folder in Joule.
7) Sources
Provide an APA style bibliography. Sources should be used and cited in
text throughout the plan as well. You will need at least one scholarly
source using the Midstate College business lib guide (link in our class in
Joule).
8) Appendices
This will include your “data sources” and any forms, surveys, flyers, etc
that you would want to include and reference throughout your plan.
