CASE STUDY ASSESSMENT PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
This assignment is designed to allow you to integrate what you have learned in this course and apply it to an individual needing help. Each of the provided case studies has unique characteristics and treatment needs. You will need to draw from all the course material to be successful with this assignment. As you choose the case to write about, you will use the knowledge you have gained to offer a diagnostic impression and treatment recommendations for the individual.

Note: The case studies involve issues that may bring up unwanted feelings or are emotional triggers for you. If this is true for you, please let your professor know in an email right away so we can discuss it privately.

INSTRUCTIONS
Choose one of the case studies provided in the course material, and read it carefully before you begin writing. The Case Study Assessment Paper Topics are found in the course under the Case Study Assessment Paper Resources section. You should NOT make up your own case study and you should NOT use one of the case studies in the textbook. This assignment is not just writing a research paper. Using the provided Case Study Assessment Paper Template and information gleaned from reading the chosen case study, you will thoroughly assess the subject’s clinical needs.

The Case Study Assessment Paper Assignment must address the spiritual, genetic, and psychosocial aspects of the individual’s behavior; ascertain if he or she is in use, abuse, or addictive cycle; and determine whether there are any co-occurring diagnoses. Think through your readings from the textbook, the definitions of use/abuse/addiction, and treatment needs associated with the level of use. Read the case study several times, paying close attention to the information that has clinical significance (e.g., what substance he/she is using, how often, how long he/she has used, longest periods without use, consequences of use, etc.). Also, pay close attention to any family history provided and what is reported about the family. Are there genetic indications and environmental influences? How might the client’s spiritual condition affect recovery? Finally, you will be expected to make a referral or recommendations for treatment based on your determination of the subject’s current needs. Please note, that you should not just say something like, “This person needs treatment.” You need to discuss the type of treatment needed and why. You should be able to support your diagnostic impression and treatment recommendations with the case history and course material.

Refer to the chapters on treatment in the Kelley textbook and the presentations and articles in the course material and focus on what you know about the client’s current use and the treatment indications of his/her use. Incorporate the reading and study materials from the course into this assessment paper, using strong literature support for your assessment of the client’s current issues and your referral suggestions. Cite the support for your assertions. Strong literature support means using the course textbooks and presentations as well as any outside academic sources needed. Cite the source(s) to support your assertions. You must have a well-established argument for treatment; this is where you need to draw from sources to explain why you are making your recommendations.

The paper must be in current APA format; a title page and reference page must be included. You must include references to at least 3 presentations from the course, references to the textbook, and references to 2-3 additional items from the Learn material to support all assertions.

There is a Case Study Assessment Paper Template provided for this assignment. The template is the skeleton of your paper. You should start by using the template as an outline. Save the template as your paper and begin filling in the information you have under each section. Use the template sections as the headings for your paper. Then you could go back and begin to discuss each section, using the information you have gathered from the class material. Add any additional information from your class material to help with this assessment and cite your sources.

The case studies are not very long, so, while you should not “make stuff up,” you certainly may need to speculate, based on the information given, about deeper issues. As long as what you are speculating seems to correspond to the information given, you will be staying on track. You may want to mention additional information that would be good to know; questions you might ask the subject if he or she were present.
Document your sources in the paper using current APA format. You are welcome to include sources other than the class material, but it is not necessary. You should have enough from what we have learned in the course modules to write this paper.
The body of the Case Study Assessment Paper Assignment must be 6–8 full pages (in addition to the title page and the reference page). Your paper must be written in current APA format (font, margins, citations, references, etc.) and have a title page and a reference page. The 6-8 pages do not include your title page or reference page. You should have 6-8 pages in THE BODY OF YOUR PAPER. Having fewer than 6 full pages will cost you points.
