Reading: Letter from the Birmingham City Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr. This reading is also on the Week 1 folder.
Your essay will explain and evaluate Dr. King’s argument defending the use of nonviolent civil disobedience to bring about legal change. Dr. King is responding to a published statement, issued by some of his fellow clergymen, which “sympathized with the goals of his movement but questioned the wisdom of his tactics.”
Body of Essay Directions
1. Introduction. Paragraph 1 is 2/3 of a page or less.
2. Explain the four basic steps of any nonviolent campaign (starts p. 238). These will be paragraphs 2-5.
3. Explain the distinction between moral and legal on p. 244. This is paragraph 6.
4. Explain the five ways a law can be unjust (morally). These are found on pp. 242-243 and will take up paragraphs 7-11.
5. Explain why “waiting” is not an option. He addresses this in many places but especially on pp. 240-241. This is paragraph 12.
6. Explain how Dr. King sees the need for nonviolent gadflies and the need for determined legal and nonviolent pressure to effectively bring change. This is on p. 240 and is paragraph 13.
7. Discuss his analogy of healing a boil with healing the tension of racial injustice discussed on pp. 244-245. This is paragraph 14.
8. Write a conclusion that evaluates Dr. King’s position where you cite a thought(s) you agree most with and any you may disagree with. Elaborate on and defend those you agree with and give an argument against any you find weak, questionable, or wrong. This is paragraph 15 and is 2/3 of a page or more.
Essay Format Directions
1. Use double space.
2. No title or title page is necessary. Just title the essay “Essay Assignment,” and type your name at the top of the first page.
3. Develop each paragraph; make each paragraph at least 4 or 5 sentences long.
4. Grammar and spelling count so use spell/grammar check and proofread your essay for mistakes the program doesn’t catch.
5. Use 1 inch margins all the way around and font size 11 on Word. Size 11 is the size of the print on this directions handout.
6. If you quote the essay directly, be sure to use quotation marks; but there is no need to make a reference or footnote in this context. You need not refer to any other publications; but if you decide to use someone else’s idea or language, be sure to give the reference. If you do this, you may use MLA or Chicago Manual of Style formats.
