  1. Open the PerfectRentals-07 workbook from your student data files.
  2. Save an Excel workbook as an Excel template.
    1. Click the File tab and choose Save As.
    2. Select This PC and click the More Options link to open the Save As dialog box.
    3. Type [your initials] PP E7-1Template in the File name box.
    4. Select the Save Thumbnail box.
    5. Click the Save as type arrow and choose Excel Template (Figure 7-16). The default folder for templates is opened.
    6. Click Save.
  3. Create data validation criteria for text.
    1. Select cells C5:C28 on the Rentals sheet. The state abbreviation is limited to two characters.
    2. Click the Data Validation button [Data tab, Data Tools group], and select the Settings tab if necessary.
    3. Click the Allow arrow and choose Text length. The operator is between for the Text length choice.
    4. Click the Minimum box and type 2.
    5. Click the Maximum box and type 2.
    6. Do not click OK yet.
  4. Create an input message for validation settings.
    1. Click the Input Message tab.
    2. Verify that the Show input message when cell is selected box is selected.
    3. Click the Title box and type State Abbreviation.
    4. Click the Input message box and type Please use two-letter abbreviation. including the period.
    5. Click OK. The input message appears because the range is selected.
  5. Enter data in a range with data validation settings.
    1. Select cell C7, type Indiana, and press Enter (Figure 7-17). The standard error alert displays.
    2. Click Retry, IN, and press Enter.
    3. Type IN in cells C8 and C9.
    4. Select cell B17. The input message box displays only for the range with validation criteria.
  6. Circle and edit invalid data.
    1. Click the Data Validation drop-down arrow [Data tab, Data Tools group].
    2. Choose Circle Invalid Data. The abbreviation for Wisconsin was entered before you applied the validation criteria.
    3. Select cell C17, type WI, and press Enter. The validation circle clears.
    4. Correct the entry in cell C18.
    5. Press Ctrl+Home to remove the input message.
  7. Create data validation criteria with a list.
    1. Click the Lists sheet tab. Note that data in both lists are sorted in ascending order.
    2. Click the Concierge sheet tab and select cells A5:A11.
    3. Click the Data Validation button [Data tab, Data Tools group].
    4. Select the Settings tab, click the Allow arrow, and choose List.
    5. Click the Source box and click the Lists worksheet tab.
    6. Select cells A1:A7 and click OK.
  8. Enter data using a validation list.
    1. Select cell A5, click the drop-down list, and choose Bicycle Rental. The cell format applies to the entry.
    2. Select cell A6, click the drop-down list, and choose Car Rental (Figure 7-18).
    3. Select entries for each of cells A7:A11 so that the service names are in alphabetical order.
  9. Type criteria for validation settings and add an error alert.
    1. Select the PopUps sheet tab and select cells F5:F28. The response for this column is Yes or No.
    2. Click the Data Validation button [Data tab, Data Tools group].
    3. Choose the Settings tab, click the Allow arrow, and choose List.
    4. Click the Source box.
    5. Type Yes,No with no space after the comma (Figure 7-19).
    6. Enter data and bypass an error alert.
      1. Click the drop-down list for cell F5 and choose No.
      2. Select cell F6, type Maybe, and press Enter (Figure 7-20).
      3. Click Yes to continue.
    7. Press Ctrl+Home.
    8. Click the Save button in the title bar to save the template with the same name.
    9. Close the template (Figure 7-21).
