Personal Call to Chaplaincy

Use the following outline to prepare your conversion story:

  1. Describe your Spiritual Journey becoming a Christian.

Christian family, Bible study, Sunday school

  1. Describe areas of ministry (pastor, lay minister, missionary, hospital chaplain) that you have already served the Lord in? Children’s Ministry and Youth Pastor assistant.
  2. What kind of ministry are you currently serving the Lord? Youth and Children’s ministry.
  3. Describe life events that affirmed your call to chaplaincy.

Life Events That Affirmed My Call to Chaplaincy:

• Christian Family Roots: Growing up in a devout Christian family that emphasized prayer, Bible study, worship, and regular church attendance established a strong spiritual foundation.

• Early Church Involvement: Participated in Sunday school from 1994-1999, later assisting as a teacher’s aide from 2000-2004, helping to plan and execute church programs.
• Military Service: Experiences as a chapel guide during Air Force Basic Military Training and a chaplain assistant during technical training deepened my understanding of spiritual service and support.
• Leadership Roles: Served as a sexual assault prevention representative (SAPR) guide, demonstrating care and advocacy for others in need.
• Deployment Experience: While deployed in Djibouti in 2022, I reviewed seminary requirements, leading to enrollment at Liberty University in 2023.
• Pastoral Support: Assisted a fellow Airman dealing with suicidal ideation by providing compassionate care, nonjudgmental support, and safe accompaniment to reunite with family.
• Youth / Children’s Ministry: Current role as a children’s ministry and youth pastor’s assistant, planning and executing youth programs and community service events, reinforces my commitment to spiritual mentorship.
• Theological Growth: Enrollment in Seminary School and ordination as a minister in 2023 further affirmed my dedication to pastoral care and spiritual leadership.
• CPE Program: Participating in Clinical Pastoral Education at the West Haven VA provided hands-on experience offering pastoral care to diverse populations.

The heart of your personal call to chaplaincy is answering the 4 questions above.

A few things to remember:

• Be real and guardedly vulnerable!

• Be truthful and honest. Do not embellish your past life and story.

• A good approach is to write out a first draft and review it as well as share with a friend. This will give you a gauge as to the need for more or less information.
• Don’t treat this like a report. This is much more than an academic pursuit.

• It would be a mistake to worry too much about your grade. Simply relax and recall how God has worked in your spiritual journey to call you into chaplaincy ministry. Then, exalt Him by communicating how He has changed your life!

Students should consider his/her own calling to chaplaincy from their own faith tradition and should be able to reflect on their ability to share their faith in the presence of other faith traditions without fear of compromise. (Military Chaplaincy).
