Ethical and Legal Practices in Human Services

Based on the evolution of your thinking about ethical and legal practices in the field of human services from the beginning through the middle and to the end of the course, submit an essay that is
both reflective and critical.
Self-Assessment- retake the self-assessment at the end Chapter 1. Respond to each of the following bullet points. Be sure to address each one in entirety and be reflective and critical of your development over the semester.

• Describe what you consider to be the most important shifts, revisions, or additions to your thinking about ethical practice on five specific survey items. Specify which of these items and in which areas of ethics your thinking has changed most.
• AREAS TO FOCUS: two
• Explain how the evolution of your thinking on these issues reflects on what constitutes an ethical practitioner in the field.
• Tell me what the code of ethics says, which code of ethics you are looking at (APA, NASW, ACA, etc), give examples of decisions you would make now vs. the beginning of the course, what changed your thinking, and how your current thinking is ethical. You must cite your sources! –
o OK to create scenarios that show the pre- and post- changes of thinking as long as it is cited using one of the following APA, NASW, ACA, etc.
• Looking back at your chapter responses – Describe if there are any shifts, revisions, or additions to your responses. Do you
feel they represent virtue ethics? Explain how they do or don’t and your rationale for standing firm on them if they do not represent virtue ethics.
o Attached are the chapter responses to help answer the above question.

• Of all of the ethical areas we have reviewed in this course, identify two that you feel are the most essential to your thinking and explain why. See chapter one.
• 1 Aspirational ethics
2 Moral Principles -autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity, and veracity
• Of all of the ethical areas we have reviewed in this course, identify two that you feel are the least essential or that constitute a hindrance to your thinking on ethics and professional practices and explain why.
• 1 – Code of ethics limitations: they are more reactive than proactive
• 2 Only working under mandatory ethics: as they make clinician to work out of fear.
Understanding You – over the semester we have discussed the importance of self exploration, self care, understanding your values and assumptions, and recognizing how these will influence you as a helper.
• Describe two things you have learned about yourself related to your values and assumptions over the semester that could impact you as a helper (we all have them, as we have learned this semester if you think you don’t you need to go back and read chapters 2, 3, & 4).
o Talk about the challenges of working with racist individuals. Refer to the book link for additional context.

o The impact of practitioner’s self-care on their clients, please add another reference.
• What steps are you going to take to ensure these do not impact your effectiveness in the workplace, especially in the

coming semesters as you intern? Give specifics beyond seeking consultation and attending personal therapy.
o Please talk about cultural humility and its importance as well as ongoing training. Elaborate on continuing self-care practices. Especially when seeing difficult clients as an intern, the importance of consulting with a supervisor.
• How do you feel about your competence in ethical practice going into the workforce?
o Make your response all positive please try to add at least one are of growth.
Your paper needs to be 7-10 pages double spaced or approximately 2,000 words in length with document and citation
formatting per APA Requirements. You must cite within the body of your paper and provide a resource list. Using our textbook and codes of ethics from different fields back up your ethical standpoint. A minimum of five sources is required.
